About the Role: Robotics Manufacturing Engineer, Line Design, Geartrain

At the core of this position is ownership — from the first concept sketch to final line launch. You’ll use CAD software and simulation tools such as AutoCAD and FactoryCAD to produce 2D and 3D models, floor plans, and detailed drawings for both the main production line and all supporting areas within geartrain manufacturing scope. You’ll design detailed cell and production line layouts for each gearbox, covering machinery placement, workstation integration, material flow paths, utilities, and storage to maximize efficiency. Custom fixtures, tooling, and structures are also part of your deliverables — all documented to build-to-print standards.

Collaboration is essential here. You’ll work closely with factory, infrastructure, material flow, design, manufacturing engineering, EHS, and project leads to integrate your layouts into the broader factory design. You’ll also ensure all solutions comply with Tesla safety regulations, ergonomic standards, and lean manufacturing principles. The role includes approximately 25% travel, and you’ll be expected to support commissioning, operator training, and production handover documentation as lines go live.

Responsibilities

This role spans the full lifecycle of geartrain manufacturing line development — from layout design and simulation all the way through commissioning and production handover. You’ll be expected to lead technical decisions, collaborate across disciplines, and take direct ownership of outcomes at every stage.

  • Design and develop detailed 2D/3D cell and production line layouts using CAD software such as AutoCAD and FactoryCAD, including machinery placement, workstations, material flow paths, and storage areas
  • Collaborate with simulation teams to develop flow manufacturing constraints for new equipment, including aisle sizing, raw material staging, and work-in-progress areas between cells
  • Install, commission, and integrate new equipment and automation systems, including troubleshooting machinery, peripheral tools, and manufacturing automation
  • Oversee production line handover to operations teams, including operator training, documentation of procedures and manufacturing BOM, and resolution of launch issues
  • Design custom fixtures, tooling, and structures for manufacturing cells, providing detailed build-to-print models and drawings for fabrication
  • Contribute to R&D efforts by integrating layout considerations, material flow, and facility requirements early in the innovation cycle to support scalable manufacturing solutions
  • Evaluate production performance data on material handling and space utilization to recommend layout improvements aligned with ongoing R&D advancements
  • Ensure compliance with Tesla safety regulations, ergonomic standards, and lean manufacturing principles across all equipment and process evaluations

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings deep, hands-on experience in high-volume manufacturing line design and has a proven track record of successfully launching new production technologies at scale. Tesla values engineers who combine rigorous technical knowledge with practical problem-solving and the ability to work across complex, cross-functional teams.

  • Degree in Industrial Engineering or a related field, or equivalent industry experience with demonstrated exceptional ability; advanced degree or certifications are a plus
  • 3–7+ years of experience in manufacturing or industrial engineering with hands-on involvement in factory and plant layout projects
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD and PDM software, with familiarity in other platforms such as CATIA or Siemens NX also considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, material flow, ergonomics, facility safety standards, and lean principles
  • Experience with automation equipment, CNC machinery, heat treatment, assembly systems, and end-of-line testing equipment
  • Knowledge of high-speed gantry design, including pick-and-place into conveyor systems, and material flow analysis for industrial robots in high-speed transfer applications
  • Strong command of drafting standards and the application of GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5
