About the Role: Robotics Engineering Technician, Metrology

This position sits within an R&D team at Tesla, where precision is non-negotiable. You’ll be programming and operating CMM equipment, working with gear measurement tools, and leveraging a broad range of measurement technologies including optical systems, profile projectors, and height gauges. Inspection reports tied to critical drawing characteristics will be a regular part of your output, and you’ll play an active role in calibration coordination and equipment maintenance.

Beyond hands-on measurement work, you’ll contribute to the lab’s overall efficiency by applying 5S methodology — sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain — to drive continuous improvement. You’ll also help source metrology equipment when capability gaps arise, making this a role that blends technical execution with operational thinking. Responsibilities

Day to day, this role is anchored in precision measurement and inspection of complex mechanical components. You’ll use a variety of high-end metrology tools and be expected to generate accurate, reliable data that feeds directly into R&D decisions. Your work will also support lab operations and equipment readiness.

• Program and operate CMM equipment to measure highly complex components with tight tolerances
• Program and operate gear measurement equipment for precision analysis
• Utilize various measurement technologies including optical measurement systems, profile projectors, height gauges, and manual inspection tools
• Prepare detailed inspection reports based on critical characteristics identified on engineering drawings
• Coordinate calibrations and actively work to resolve equipment maintenance issues
• Source metrology equipment as needed to address emerging capability gaps
• Apply 5S cyclical methodology to sustain a well-organized, continuously improving lab workspace

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in CMM programming and metrology, paired with a strong grasp of GD&T principles per ASME Y14.5. Tesla values people who can handle competing priorities without losing precision, and who are eager to expand their skills in a fast-moving R&D environment.

• 5+ years of experience programming and operating CMM equipment is required
• Calypso and MCOSMOS experience is considered a strong asset
• Strong understanding of GD&T as per ASME Y14.5 standards
• Experience with tight tolerances in metric units (microns)
• Ability to design inspection fixtures to secure parts during measurement
• Ability to design hard gauges is an asset
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to work under tight deadlines
