Responsibilities

This role sits at the core of Tesla’s powertrain engineering operation. You’ll be expected to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously — from design and prototyping to production support — contributing to both the technical quality and the manufacturing readiness of Tesla’s electric motors.

  • Design and industrialize stators for integration into Tesla’s powertrain systems
  • Collaborate with electromagnetic motor design engineers and actuator engineers to develop purpose-built motors
  • Drive continuous improvement of existing designs to reduce cost and improve performance and reliability
  • Prototype, test, and troubleshoot electric motors in a hands-on lab environment
  • Perform basic fabrication, machining, wiring, electronics debugging, and testing
  • Coordinate with supply chain, vendors, and manufacturing engineering teams
  • Support pilot production assembly, driving process improvements and ensuring quality standards

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in mechanical engineering with practical experience in both product design and manufacturing. Tesla values engineers who are just as comfortable with a CAD model as they are on the shop floor — someone who thrives in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment.

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 1+ years of experience in mechanical engineering within a product design and manufacturing context
  • Experience with motor design and manufacturing for actuators used in motion control applications
  • Prototyping experience with stators, rotors, and geared actuators — including knowledge of stator manufacturing methods
  • Hands-on machine shop skills including hand tools, metrology equipment, and mill/lathe operation (desirable)
  • Proficiency with engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stacks, and FEA; familiarity with 3DX (Catia), SolidWorks, or similar
  • Experience with assembly and quality control processes and systems
  • Familiarity with electric motor, electric drive, and motion control technologies
