About the Role: Cake Decorator

As a Cake Decorator at Costco Edmonton, you’ll be responsible for the full decorating process — from slicing and layering cakes to applying frostings, garnishes, and personalized writing. You’ll work directly with member special orders, reading specifications to determine the right flavours, colours, and patterns, and following up with members when instructions need clarification. Attention to detail and adherence to Costco’s production formulas and standards are central to this position.

Keeping your decorating area clean and organized is part of the job, as is following all safety and security procedures throughout your shift. You’ll also assist with other bakery duties as needed and provide prompt, courteous service to warehouse members whenever the opportunity arises.

Responsibilities

This role covers the full spectrum of cake decorating and bakery production at Costco. From preparing layers to personalizing special orders, each task contributes directly to the quality of product on the warehouse floor. Here’s what a typical shift looks like:

• Frost and fill cakes using a spatula, applying filling between layers and garnishing by hand according to Costco formulas
• Decorate cakes using pastry bags and various tips to create borders, figures, and personalized writing that match member special orders
• Slice half-sheet cakes by hand using a 16″ knife or slicing machine, then place on pre-cut cardboard cake pads
• Read and interpret member special orders to determine the correct flavours, colours, and decorative patterns; telephone members when instructions are unclear
• Prepare cheesecakes by removing from baking pans, placing on cake pads, applying toppings with a spatula, and garnishing per Costco standards
• Operate equipment including a whipping cream machine; slice fresh fruit for application to baked products
• Box and transfer cakes by assembling cardboard cake boxes, loading boxed cakes onto wheeled racks, and transferring them to the cooler, freezer, or wrapping area
• Maintain a clean decorating area, follow all safety and security procedures, and assist with other bakery duties as needed
• Provide prompt and courteous service to warehouse members at all times

Requirements / Skills

Costco is looking for candidates who can work precisely under production timelines while maintaining consistent quality across every finished cake. A background in cake decorating or a related bakery role will set your application apart, though a willingness to learn Costco’s specific formulas and procedures is equally valued.

• Cake decorating experience is preferred — candidates with this background will be given priority consideration
• High School Diploma or GED is preferred for this position
• Food Safety Certification – Level 1 is required by your first day in the position

• Strong attention to detail for both decorative work and member special order fulfilment
