Responsibilities

The Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner role at Costco Edmonton covers a broad range of clinical, retail, and administrative duties. • Examine members’ eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist in the fitting of contact lenses
• Process orders by keying member orders into the computer system and placing special orders to outside vendors by telephone
• Dispense and adjust completed eyeglasses and contact lenses, checking against prescription prior to dispensing and adjusting frames using a frame warmer
• Handle payments accurately, including cash, cheques, credit and debit transactions, following proper cash handling procedures
• Maintain stock of optical merchandise, supplies, and contact lens trials, and follow department standards for production, record keeping, and product storage
• Oversee apprentices and students as required for certification qualification purposes
• Maintain provincial licensing requirements to ensure membership in the provincial order remains in good standing
• Support members in booking doctor appointments and maintain a safe, clean healthcare environment at all times

Requirements / Skills

This position requires a provincially licensed optician with active contact lens fitter certification. The ideal candidate brings a combination of clinical precision, strong member service instincts, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced retail optical environment.

• Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — relevant provincial education and training required
• Provincial Dispensing Optician licence — must be currently valid and in good standing
• Certified Contact Lens Fitter designation — required at time of hire (or enrolment in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year if not yet certified)
• Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Fitter experience — prior professional experience preferred
• Computer and math skills — used daily for order entry, payment processing, and inventory management
