About the Role: Loss Prevention Clerk

As a Loss Prevention Clerk at Costco Waterloo, you’ll be responsible for detecting and preventing both external shoplifting and potential internal dishonesty. You’ll patrol the warehouse and its perimeter for up to eight hours per day, respond to theft incidents, and liaise with the Warehouse Manager and Regional Loss Prevention Manager on internal investigations. Your work directly contributes to reducing shrink and keeping the warehouse a safe place for members and staff alike.

Responsibilities

The Loss Prevention Clerk role covers a broad range of duties tied to security, safety, and theft deterrence. Each responsibility below contributes directly to the safe and efficient operation of the warehouse.

  • Patrol the warehouse and perimeter for up to 8 hours a day to monitor safety and security concerns
  • Observe, detect, prevent, and apprehend shoplifters within Costco locations
  • Detain and interview shoplifting suspects when warranted
  • Report internal dishonesty observations to the Warehouse Manager and Regional Loss Prevention Manager for approval to investigate
  • Identify shrink reduction opportunities within warehouse operations and report them to management
  • Prepare reports for internal use and potential prosecution, and maintain evidence and investigation files
  • Testify in court concerning theft investigations when required
  • Teach and coach Loss Prevention topics, policies, and procedures to other members of the warehouse team
  • Communicate with other area Costco Loss Prevention Clerks and local businesses to share information on current theft threats
  • Assist in other areas of the warehouse as necessary

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate for this role brings hands-on loss prevention experience and a strong working knowledge of Canadian law as it relates to theft, fraud, and individual rights. Costco values candidates who can exercise sound judgement, communicate clearly under pressure, and work collaboratively with both internal teams and external authorities. A calm, professional demeanour is essential when handling detentions and investigations.

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Valid Loss Prevention Licence as required by the Province of Ontario
  • Loss Prevention experience preferred, with candidates who have this background given preference over others
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada relating to theft and fraud offences, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Trespass Act, and Privacy Acts
  • Communication, observation, and problem-solving skills are required
