Amazon Web Services is hiring a Senior Software Development Engineer III for the RDS for Oracle team in Vancouver, BC. The scope here is genuinely full-stack: from kernel-level optimizations and storage architecture to customer-facing APIs and operational tooling. About the Role: Sr Software Dev Engineer III, RDS for Oracle
In this position, you’ll lead the design and implementation of large-scale distributed database systems on AWS, with a focus on high availability, scalability, and performance optimization. You’ll engage directly with enterprise customers to translate their requirements into technical specifications, and collaborate with account managers and solutions architects to deliver database solutions that meet real business needs.
Beyond building features, you’ll contribute to product strategy, drive agile development cycles, and ensure that all solutions meet security and compliance standards including FedRAMP, GDPR, and HIPAA. You’ll also create technical documentation, whitepapers, and best practices guides for both internal teams and customers.
Benefits and Salary
The base salary range for this position is $150,700 to $251,700 CAD annually. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs), with final compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities
This role spans architecture, delivery, customer engagement, and team leadership. You’ll be expected to operate at a high level of technical ownership across the full software development lifecycle, from prototyping new features to ensuring production systems meet enterprise-grade reliability and compliance requirements.
- Lead the architecture and design of large-scale, distributed database systems using RDS Oracle in AWS cloud environments
- Optimize performance for high availability and scalability, including developing solutions that integrate Linux-based RDS Oracle with AWS infrastructure
- Design integrations between Oracle and other AWS services such as EC2, VPC, and IAM
- Serve as a technical lead for enterprise-level database services, addressing complex customer requirements and collaborating with account managers and solutions architects
- Engage directly with customers to gather requirements, provide technical consultations, and translate needs into product roadmap items
- Lead agile development cycles to prototype, develop, and deploy new database features while balancing speed, code quality, security, and scalability
- Develop monitoring and automation tools for large-scale database deployments, and integrate AI and ML technologies to enhance performance and security
- Ensure compliance with security standards including FedRAMP, GDPR, and HIPAA, and implement security best practices for cloud database management
- Mentor junior team members, conduct design reviews, and provide feedback on architecture, performance, and scalability

Requirements / Skills
AWS is looking for an experienced engineer with deep expertise in database or distributed systems, strong leadership instincts, and the ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly to a range of audiences. - 5+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship) with at least one programming language
- 5+ years leading design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team lead
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to both business and technical audiences
- Deep expertise in at least one of: database systems, distributed systems, storage architecture, or systems programming
- Preferred: Full software development lifecycle experience including code reviews, source control, testing, and operations (5+ years)
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent
- Preferred: Experience with AWS services or other cloud platforms, Oracle DB or NoSQL databases, and open source tools
- Preferred: Experience with cloud infrastructure or managed services, and operational or continuous improvement roles
