Your team owns the end-to-end promotions and deals experience on Amazon — a platform that serves data and ranking signals to over 150 internal teams across the company. The mission is to create a unified promotional experience that presents customers with the most relevant savings, bridging deals, coupons, price discounts, and other formats into a cohesive shopping journey. The scale here is significant: your services need to maintain high availability through peak-traffic events while continuously evolving.
Day-to-day, you’ll move between reviewing operational metrics and service health dashboards, running architecture reviews, roadmap sessions with product partners, and one-on-ones focused on career growth. Benefits and Salary
The base salary range for this position is $171,400 to $286,200 CAD annually, with final compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and location. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Responsibilities
As Software Development Manager for the Promotions Customer Experience team, you’ll be accountable for both the technical direction and the people behind one of Amazon’s highest-reach platforms. Your responsibilities span strategic planning, system architecture, and day-to-day team leadership — requiring you to be equally comfortable in a design review and a career development conversation.
- Own the technical strategy and multi-year roadmap for a core promotions platform, aligning engineering investments with customer and business goals
- Lead, hire, coach, and develop a team of software engineers, building an inclusive, high-performing culture and supporting each individual’s career growth
- Drive system design and architecture decisions across distributed services, real-time and batch data pipelines, and machine-learning-driven merchandising at scale
- Operate and continuously improve services that supply deals and promotions data to over 150 internal consumers, maintaining high availability through peak-traffic events
- Partner with product management, design, and peer engineering teams to define requirements, prioritize work, and deliver measurable outcomes for customers
Requirements / Skills
Amazon is looking for a leader who brings deep engineering experience alongside the people skills to build and sustain a high-performing team. You should be comfortable navigating both complex distributed systems and the nuances of growing individual engineers — and ideally have done both at meaningful scale.
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years working directly within engineering teams, with hands-on technical depth
- 3+ years of experience designing or architecting new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
- 8+ years leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns across the full software/hardware/networks development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, certification, and live-site operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams to align engineering and business priorities
- Preferred: Experience communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements and describe product features, technical designs, and strategy
- Preferred: Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and managing software engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness
