Software Engineer, S3 Discovery – Amazon – Vancouver, BC

About the Role: Software Engineer, S3 Discovery

Day to day, you’ll be responsible for designing, delivering, and maintaining the operational health of S3 Distribution Plane services. That includes keeping build and release systems running smoothly, maximising uptime for both developers and customers, and continuously raising the operational bar. You’ll participate in design reviews, operations meetings, and leadership discussions, and you’ll partner across AWS to build ground-breaking networking and security solutions in code.

Beyond the technical work, this role carries a strong mentorship and knowledge-sharing component. You’ll coach and guide junior engineers, write clear documentation, and contribute to a team culture that values operational excellence, work-life balance, and continuous learning. Amazon operates a regular on-call rotation, and the team works hard to minimise after-hours disruption while maintaining the exacting reliability standards S3 customers depend on.

Benefits and Salary

The base salary range for this position is $114,800 – $191,800 CAD annually, with final compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Responsibilities

Working on the S3 Distribution Plane team means owning what you build. Engineers in this role are expected to go beyond writing code — they drive operational excellence, shape architecture decisions, and invest in the growth of those around them. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

• Design and deliver services and systems spanning DNS, IP connectivity, TLS certificates, VPC endpoints, and private connectivity at global scale
• Maintain operational health of services, build and release systems, and uptime for developers and customers
• Develop tools to streamline operations, reduce operational load, and improve the team’s overall operational posture
• Identify and implement improvements to test infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to make them more robust and flexible
• Investigate and recommend best practices for code quality, fleet health, security, and service reliability
• Mentor junior engineers, growing their skills, deepening their knowledge of systems, and helping them deliver more effectively
• Write clear documentation and share knowledge with wider teams so other engineers can get the most from the service and tooling
• Partner with AWS service teams — including Route 53, EC2, and AWS Networking — to deliver solutions that require broad integration across AWS
• Participate in on-call rotation alongside engineers and managers to resolve issues and uphold S3’s high availability standards

Requirements / Skills

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship experience in design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
• Proficiency in at least one software programming language
• 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience — including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations (preferred)
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent (preferred)
