Software Development Engineer – Amazon – Vancouver, BC

Vancouver’s tech scene has a new opportunity worth paying attention to. Amazon’s Customer Service Technologies division is looking for a Software Development Engineer to join the team building the Network Control Center (NCC) — a greenfield, AI-native platform designed to fundamentally change how Amazon detects, responds to, and recovers from incidents across its global Customer Service network.

This isn’t a role where you’ll be maintaining legacy code or working inside a rigid, already-defined system. The NCC is a new initiative, and the team is small, focused, and moving fast. You’ll be working directly with applied scientists, product managers, and senior engineers to take ambiguous customer problems and turn them into production systems that operate at massive scale — touching the experience of millions of customers worldwide.

About the Role: Software Development Engineer

The core of this position is building the systems that replace Amazon’s current fragmented, manually operated incident management approach with continuous observability, autonomous response, and intelligent customer recovery. You’ll own the end-to-end delivery of features — from technical design and implementation through to deployment and production operation. The work spans real-time signal processing, anomaly detection, autonomous incident response, and closed-loop recovery systems.

You’ll also be collaborating closely with applied science teams to integrate ML models for anomaly detection, predictive alerting, and closed-loop learning into live production environments. Operational ownership is a real part of this role — you’ll participate in on-call rotations, build dashboards and runbooks, and continuously improve system reliability. There’s also a mentorship component: you’ll help junior engineers grow in system design, code quality, and operational best practices.

Benefits and Salary

The base salary range for this Software Development Engineer position in Vancouver, BC is $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually. Amazon’s total compensation package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Final compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities

As a core member of the Network Control Center engineering team, your day-to-day work will centre on building reliable, scalable systems from the ground up. These responsibilities span platform architecture, cross-functional collaboration, and active operational ownership — this team builds it and runs it.

• Design, build, and operate core NCC platform capabilities including real-time observability, incident detection, autonomous response, and customer recovery systems
• Own end-to-end delivery of features and subsystems — from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production operation
• Collaborate with applied science teams to integrate ML models for anomaly detection, predictive alerting, and closed-loop learning workflows into production systems
• Solve distributed systems challenges including real-time event processing at scale, low-latency decision making, and fault-tolerant service design
• Operate what you build — participate in on-call rotations, build operational dashboards and runbooks, and drive continuous improvement of system reliability
• Contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews, and engineering best practices that raise the bar across the team
• Mentor junior engineers on system design, code quality, and operational best practices

Requirements / Skills

Amazon is looking for an engineer who thrives in ambiguity and takes genuine ownership of what they build. The ideal candidate brings strong software development fundamentals alongside real experience with distributed systems and a commitment to operational excellence and code quality.

• 3+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship), with a track record of shipping production systems
• 2+ years of design or architecture experience covering design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
• Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional software development context
• Full software development life cycle experience including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations (preferred)
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent (preferred)
• Experience with high-availability distributed systems and services (preferred)
• Familiarity with AWS services and experience designing, building, and managing large-scale distributed systems or web services (preferred)
• Experience managing critical operational processes with SLA responsibility (preferred)
