Sr Manager, Software Dev, Elastic Container Service – Amazon – Vancouver, BC

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Senior Manager, Software Development to take the helm of engineering teams within the Elastic Container Service (ECS) organization in Vancouver, BC. ECS is a fully managed container orchestration service that helps thousands of customers deploy, manage, and scale containerized applications reliably at global scale. This is a senior leadership role with real ownership — you’ll set technical direction, shape roadmaps, and grow a high-performing engineering organization.

In this position, you’ll lead two or more engineering teams through the full software development lifecycle, from initial requirements and design all the way through delivery, operations, and continuous improvement. You’ll collaborate closely with Principal Engineers, Product Managers, and senior AWS leaders to define a multi-year technical vision for ECS, then translate that vision into concrete, measurable quarterly and annual deliverables. Vancouver is a growing AWS engineering hub, and you’ll play a key role in building the local culture and talent pipeline.

About the Role: Sr Manager, Software Development — ECS

As the senior engineering leader for ECS in Vancouver, you’ll own the delivery of critical platform features that serve production workloads for customers around the world. Your mandate includes defining and executing a multi-year technical roadmap, establishing operational excellence standards (availability, latency, scalability, and security), and driving cross-team architectural decisions with data-driven engineering rigour. You’ll represent the Vancouver organization in AWS-wide planning processes, including OP1/OP2 cycles and headcount planning.

Beyond the technical work, this role is fundamentally about people. You’ll recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent in Vancouver, building out engineers and engineering managers who can raise the bar across AWS globally. You’ll hold teams accountable through design reviews, operational reviews, and post-incident analysis, while fostering a culture of innovation and high-quality engineering standards.

Benefits and Salary

The base salary range for this position is $214,200 to $357,800 CAD annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and location. As part of Amazon’s total compensation approach, the package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Responsibilities

This role carries broad ownership across engineering delivery, organizational leadership, and strategic planning. Day-to-day, you’ll be equally focused on shipping high-quality ECS features and developing the people and processes that make long-term execution possible. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

• Own delivery of ECS features and platform improvements that directly serve thousands of customers running production workloads on AWS
• Define and execute a multi-year technical roadmap aligned with AWS ECS product strategy and evolving customer needs
• Build and scale the engineering organization in Vancouver, BC — hiring engineers and engineering managers who raise the bar
• Partner with Product Management and Technical Program Management to translate customer requirements into engineering plans with clear milestones and measurable outcomes
• Establish and maintain operational excellence standards including availability, latency, scalability, and security targets for ECS services
• Drive cross-team architectural decisions and resolve technical ambiguity using data and engineering rigour
• Represent Vancouver in AWS-wide planning processes, including OP1/OP2 cycles and headcount planning
• Hold teams accountable to high-quality engineering standards through design reviews, operational reviews, and post-incident analysis

Requirements / Skills

This role is suited to a seasoned engineering leader who has experience managing complex, large-scale software organizations and can operate comfortably at both the strategic and hands-on technical levels. • 10+ years of engineering experience, with a track record of delivering consumer-facing software at scale
• 5+ years of engineering team management experience, including managing managers
• Experience partnering with product or program management teams to define requirements and drive deliverables
• Agile environment experience, managing multiple concurrent programs, projects, and development teams
• Experience with AWS or cloud-based technology solutions is preferred, as is familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, or the containers ecosystem
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to perform complex business case analysis and present findings to senior leadership
• Experience hiring, developing, and promoting engineering talent, with a demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams
