About the Role: Sr. Absence Management Specialist
This position is accountable for the ongoing development and implementation of DHL’s absence management program across Canada. You’ll be the primary point of contact for employees, supervisors, HR Business Partners, and external stakeholders when it comes to employee absences, workplace injury management, and disability case coordination. The role demands both strategic thinking and hands-on case management.
You’ll collaborate closely with internal teams including health and safety and HRBPs, as well as external parties such as insurance providers, healthcare professionals, and government bodies. Ensuring compliance with Canadian employment standards, leave legislation, human rights requirements, and workers’ compensation regulations is central to this role. Responsibilities
This role spans several interconnected functions — from day-to-day case management of employee leaves to building and refining company-wide absence programs. You’ll need to balance empathy for employees with a rigorous approach to compliance, reporting, and stakeholder coordination.
- Administer and manage employee absence programs, including sick leave, family leave, and other types of leave across Canada
- Monitor and track employee absences to identify patterns and trends, reporting findings to HR leadership
- Coordinate with employees, supervisors, and HRBPs to manage planned and unplanned absences with minimal disruption to operations
- Handle all aspects of workplace injury claims, including reporting, documentation, and communication with insurance providers and healthcare professionals
- Develop and implement return-to-work plans in collaboration with injured employees and leaders, including modified duties and accommodations
- Ensure compliance with provincial and federal leave legislation, human rights requirements, and workers’ compensation regulations
- Oversee the accommodation management process and develop or revise related processes, procedures, and form templates as needed
- Prepare and present reports, KPIs, and trend analyses on absence and workplace injury statistics to senior management
- Train and coach supervisors and managers on absence management policies, documentation requirements, and their responsibilities under applicable legislation
- Provide bilingual service (English and French) to employees and stakeholders across Canada, ensuring clear communication of policies and procedures

- Full bilingualism in English and French — this is a mandatory requirement for this position
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Occupational Health & Safety, Business Administration, or a related field
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in absence management and disability management
- Expertise in occupational and non-occupational disability claims, including workers’ compensation and return-to-work programs
- Strong knowledge of Canadian employment standards, leave legislation, human rights obligations, and accommodation requirements
- Experience in a unionized environment, including interpretation and application of collective agreement provisions related to absences, disability, and accommodation
- Analytical capabilities including KPI management, trend analysis, and executive-level reporting
- Exceptional communication and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to manage confidential matters with professionalism and discretion
