Day to day, you’ll be working with technologies like Scala, Akka, Reactive Streams, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes to design and operate distributed systems that monitor, optimize, and control millions of devices across the grid. This is systems-level engineering at a global scale — connecting renewable energy generation, storage, grid services, and EV charging infrastructure in real time.

About the Role: Software Distributed Systems Engineer

In this position, you’ll take ownership of distributed software systems that process streaming data from millions of IoT devices worldwide. You’ll work across the full lifecycle — from design and development through production operation — focusing on the scalability, reliability, availability, and security of systems that can’t afford to fail. This isn’t a typical backend role; the systems you build directly influence how renewable energy is dispatched, stored, and sold across global electricity markets.

Beyond the technical work, you’ll be expected to provide technical leadership, foster team collaboration, and help maintain a culture built on engineering excellence, curiosity, and a strong bias for action. Tesla values engineers who think in systems, take initiative, and bring both technical rigour and a willingness to be transparent about what they know and don’t know.

Responsibilities

As a Software Distributed Systems Engineer on Tesla’s Energy Software team, your work will span design, implementation, testing, and ongoing operation of the cloud services that power Tesla’s energy products. These responsibilities require someone who thinks deeply about system behaviour under pressure — at the scale of millions of devices operating in real time across distributed infrastructure.

  • Design and develop distributed software systems that incorporate real-time and streaming data for monitoring, aggregation, and control of millions of IoT devices
  • Characterize complex problems related to the scalability, reliability, performance, and security of production systems
  • Test performance and reliability of software systems at scale, including building the supporting services for that testing
  • Provide technical leadership by fostering collaboration across the team and driving key initiatives to completion
  • Maintain and operate production systems, ensuring high availability and strong engineering standards
  • Uphold team values including engineering excellence, curiosity, a bias for action, self-awareness, inclusivity, and vulnerability

Requirements / Skills

Tesla is looking for engineers who have hands-on experience building and supporting large-scale production systems and who can bring strong fundamentals in computer science to bear on real-world distributed systems challenges. If you’re comfortable working at the intersection of systems programming, cloud infrastructure, and streaming data, you’ll fit well in this team.

  • Several years of industry experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale systems in production environments
  • Experience with large-scale distributed fault-tolerant services — you understand how things break and how to prevent it
  • Strong understanding of low-level OS concepts including multi-threading, memory management, networking, storage, performance, and scale
  • Strong CS fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems theory
  • Systems programming skills including multi-threading and concurrency; fluency in Akka or Scala is preferred
  • Track record of creative problem solving — you identify issues and implement solutions independently
  • Cloud infrastructure experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
