About the Role: Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Automated Test Equipment
Day to day, you’ll be architecting automated test equipment, producing detailed CAD models and pneumatic diagrams, and verifying designs through structural and thermal FEA and CFD analysis. You’ll work across the full equipment development lifecycle — from conceptual design through to acceptance testing, validation, and production release. Balancing product specifications, process requirements, cost, and lead-time constraints is central to the work.
This role also requires a genuine willingness to get your hands dirty: building, debugging, and fine-tuning equipment alongside cross-functional engineering teams. Domestic and international travel is expected to support equipment deployment and collaboration with global teams. Tesla offers a competitive total compensation package. The salary range for this Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer role is $101,200 – $151,200 per year, plus cash and stock awards. Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll own the design and delivery of automated test equipment used to validate Tesla’s most critical power electronics technologies. Your contributions span from early conceptual development through final production release, requiring both deep technical rigour and practical hands-on engagement throughout.
- Architect automated test equipment and produce detailed-level CAD models and pneumatic diagrams
- Verify designs using structural and thermal FEA and CFD analysis
- Lead conceptual equipment development, carefully balancing product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time constraints
- Identify and implement improvements to performance, robustness, and ease of assembly
- Analyse system constraints and propose innovative engineering solutions
- Support building, debugging, and validation efforts and fine-tune equipment for production release
- Conduct detailed testing and validation of installed machinery to ensure robustness and quality
- Perform on-site and off-site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of test equipment
Requirements / Skills
The ideal candidate brings a combination of deep mechanical engineering knowledge and practical automation and machine design experience. Tesla is looking for someone who is equally comfortable in a design environment and on the floor troubleshooting hardware — and who can collaborate effectively across engineering disciplines.
- 6+ years of experience as a Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineer with a focus on automation, machine design, robotics, and product development
- Experience transitioning products and processes from prototype to production
- Knowledge in solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, testing methods, machining, and fabrication processes
- Exposure to sensors, microcontrollers, robots, and relays
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, and Ansys, or similar CAD/CAE software
- Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience
