About the Role: CAD Mechanical Designer

As a CAD Mechanical Designer at Tesla, your primary focus will be translating engineering concepts into high-quality CAD models and technical drawings. Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll be at the intersection of engineering and precision drafting, supporting Tesla’s test equipment development from concept through to detailed documentation. Your work directly enables the test team to build and maintain reliable, high-quality test solutions across a broad range of products and applications.

  • Transform engineering ideas into high-quality 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings for large assemblies and equipment
  • Generate part drawings for machine shops and equipment-building vendors in accordance with engineering standards
  • Track redlines and modifications rigorously to ensure the accuracy of digital twins for all equipment and machinery
  • Create detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) from CAD models to keep both BOMs and models current
  • Maintain the team-wide PDM/PLM system to support organized and efficient data management
  • Sustain macros and templates to continuously improve team workflow and efficiency
  • Support the preparation of machinery maintenance and service manuals as well as spare parts kits
  • Design end effectors and testers, and establish and review CAD standards and best practices

Requirements / Skills

Tesla is looking for a technically proficient CAD designer who brings both hands-on experience and a methodical approach to engineering documentation. Candidates who have worked in complex mechanical or test equipment environments will be well-positioned for this role, particularly those comfortable working within structured engineering workflows and standards.

  • CAD expertise — over 3 years or 1,000 hours of professional experience using SolidWorks or comparable CAD software
  • 3D modelling and 2D drafting proficiency, particularly for intricate, large-scale machinery
  • GD&T knowledge — ability to read, interpret, and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles
  • PDM/PLM system experience for streamlining engineering data and documentation processes
  • Technical documentation skills — accomplished at producing comprehensive drawings and documentation for automated equipment
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or EPlan software packages is an asset
  • Exposure to test systems, industrial sensors, and production machinery (e.g., pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers) is preferred

  • Associate’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent proven experience
