About the Role: Software Development Engineer, Charge Calc
The Charge Calculation team owns the systems that orchestrate how charges are computed, represented, and communicated throughout the full consumer buying journey — from cart to order confirmation. As an SDE on this team, you’ll take end-to-end ownership of complex distributed systems, working across dozens of upstream and downstream services that touch the core purchase experience. The scale here is real: your architectural decisions directly affect reliability and correctness for hundreds of millions of customers worldwide.
This role also carries a strong leadership and mentorship dimension. You’ll be expected to raise the bar across the engineering team — championing operational excellence, establishing best practices, leading design reviews, and helping grow the next generation of engineering talent. Bridging technology with business impact is central to the role, requiring you to deeply understand customer needs and align engineering investments with strategic objectives.
Benefits and Salary
The base salary range for this position in Vancouver, BC is $150,700 to $251,700 CAD annually. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities
As a senior Software Development Engineer on the Charge Calc team, your day-to-day work spans the full spectrum of technical leadership — from hands-on architecture and system design to mentoring engineers and influencing the team’s long-term strategy. - Architect and lead end-to-end design of complex, distributed systems — from broadly defined business problems to production-ready architectures that scale to millions of customers
- Drive engineering excellence by championing operational excellence, code quality, security, and reliability — establishing patterns and standards that grow with the system
- Mentor and develop engineering talent through coaching, design reviews, and fostering a culture of ownership and continuous learning across the organization
- Shape technical strategy by bridging technology and business — deeply understanding customer needs and ensuring engineering investments align with strategic objectives
- Influence the team’s long-term roadmap and help drive Amazon’s multi-year strategic growth initiatives with architectures that don’t yet exist
- Collaborate closely with upstream and downstream service teams across Amazon’s eCommerce platform to ensure correctness, performance, and resilience
Requirements / Skills
This role is designed for a senior engineer who brings not just deep technical expertise, but also the leadership instincts to elevate those around them. - 5+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship) — a strong foundation in building production systems at scale
- 5+ years of programming experience in at least one software programming language
- 5+ years leading design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or engineering team lead — demonstrated ability to grow and guide engineers
- Full software development life cycle experience (preferred) — including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent (preferred)
