AWS AppSync is a fully managed, serverless service that allows developers to build GraphQL and Pub/Sub APIs connecting applications to data sources like Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Lambda, and HTTP endpoints — all behind a single API endpoint. As a Software Development Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing, building, testing, and operating features and components that keep this service running seamlessly as it scales globally.

This role calls for strong technical ownership. You’ll make sound design decisions, participate in code and design reviews, and work closely with senior engineers across the company. The base salary range for this position in Vancouver, BC is $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually. Amazon’s total compensation package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), with final compensation based on experience, qualifications, and location. Benefits include comprehensive health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, and basic life & AD&D coverage), a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), a Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP), paid time off, and additional resources to support health and well-being.

Responsibilities

As a Software Development Engineer on AWS AppSync, your day-to-day work spans the full development lifecycle — from initial design and implementation through to production operation. You’ll take end-to-end ownership of well-scoped projects and collaborate with engineers across Amazon to deliver reliable, scalable cloud services that developers depend on globally.

  • Design, build, and test features and components of the AWS AppSync service
  • Own end-to-end delivery of scoped projects, from design through production deployment
  • Contribute to technical designs and decision-making through design and code reviews
  • Improve operational excellence, security, and quality across the areas you own
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to deliver features to customers around the globe
  • Identify and implement improvements to existing frameworks, tools, and processes to reduce waste and drive continuous improvement

Requirements / Skills

Amazon is looking for engineers who are versatile, self-directed, and eager to dive deep on complex problems across the full stack. Strong ownership, sound technical judgment, and the ability to work effectively on distributed systems at scale are key traits for success in this role.

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of experience with design or architecture — including design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional software development context
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience (coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations) — preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent — preferred
