About the Role: Software Development Engineer, S3 Nexus

On a day-to-day basis, you’ll be responsible for designing, delivering, and maintaining the operational health of S3 distribution services. That means owning the build and release systems, keeping uptime high for developers and customers, and partnering across AWS — working closely with teams like Amazon Route 53, AWS EC2, and AWS Networking — to deliver ground-breaking solutions at scale. Thinking beyond S3 and across the broader AWS ecosystem is a core part of the job.

The team places a strong emphasis on operational excellence, test automation, and code quality. There’s a regular on-call rotation shared across engineers and managers alike, with a real focus on minimizing disruption and keeping the team well-rested and effective. Benefits and Salary

Amazon offers a base salary range of $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually for this role in Vancouver. Total compensation may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), with final figures determined by experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities

As part of the S3 Distribution Plane team, you’ll work across a broad range of engineering challenges — from tooling and automation to mentorship and cross-team collaboration. These responsibilities reflect the team’s high ownership culture, where engineers are expected to think big, ship often, and continuously raise the operational bar.

• Design and deliver services in DNS, IP networking, TLS, VPC Endpoints, and Private Connectivity at global scale
• Maintain operational health of production services, including build and release systems, to ensure maximum uptime
• Develop tools that streamline operations as the platform scales, reducing operational load and improving posture
• Identify and implement improvements to test infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines for greater robustness and flexibility
• Investigate and recommend best practices for code quality, fleet health, security, and service reliability
• Mentor junior engineers, helping them develop technical skills and a strong understanding of team systems
• Write clear documentation and share knowledge across broader teams to improve how everyone uses shared services and tools
• Participate in on-call rotation, design reviews, operations meetings, and leadership discussions
• Collaborate across AWS with teams like Route 53, EC2, and Networking to deliver integrated, large-scale solutions

Requirements / Skills

Amazon is looking for engineers who have real-world experience building and operating complex distributed systems, and who take genuine ownership of the code they ship. The team values people who are curious, collaborative, and able to mentor others while continuing to grow themselves.

• 3+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship) in a production environment
• 2+ years of design or architecture experience working with design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
• Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional software development context
• 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience (preferred), including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent (preferred)
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, networking concepts, and large-scale infrastructure is an asset
