Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed) – Costco – Saskatoon, SK

Saskatoon’s Costco location on Marquis Drive is looking for a Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner to join their optical team. This is a hands-on clinical and retail role that puts your provincial licensure and dispensing expertise to work every day, helping members find the right eyewear and contact lens solutions for their needs.

In this role, you’ll be the go-to expert for everything from frame selection and lens dispensing to contact lens fitting and slit lamp assessments. You’ll work directly with members, oversee apprentices, and keep the department running smoothly — all while maintaining your provincial licensing in good standing.

About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed)

As a Licensed Optician at Costco Saskatoon, your day-to-day work covers a wide range of optical services. You’ll assist members in selecting eyeglass frames, ophthalmic lenses, sunglasses, and contact lenses, ensuring every recommendation aligns with the member’s prescription and lifestyle. Accurate measurements — including pupillary distance, multifocal heights, and bifocal heights — are a core part of what you’ll do.

Beyond the clinical side, you’ll handle order processing, cash and payment transactions, and inventory management. You’ll also be responsible for overseeing apprentices and students working toward their certification, maintaining a safe and clean healthcare environment, and following all department standards for record keeping, merchandising, and product storage.

Responsibilities

This role covers the full spectrum of optical care and retail service. As the licensed professional on the floor, you’ll be expected to deliver accurate, member-focused service while keeping the department organized, stocked, and compliant with provincial and Costco standards.

• Assist members in selecting frames, lenses, sunglasses, and contact lenses that match their prescriptions and preferences
• Measure pupillary distance using a pupilometer or ruler, and accurately determine multifocal and bifocal heights
• Examine eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist with contact lens fitting
• Process orders by entering member information into the computer and placing special orders with outside vendors by telephone
• Dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses after verifying them against the prescription; fit and adjust frames using a frame warmer and manual techniques
• Handle transactions including cash, cheques, and credit/debit payments in accordance with Costco procedures
• Manage inventory by ordering equipment, merchandise, and supplies and maintaining proper contact lens trial levels
• Oversee apprentices and students as required for their certification qualification
• Maintain licensing requirements to ensure your provincial membership remains in good standing
• Uphold cleanliness and safety standards throughout the optical department at all times

Requirements / Skills

This position is suited to a qualified optical professional who holds the necessary provincial credentials and brings hands-on dispensing and contact lens fitting experience. Costco values candidates who combine clinical accuracy with genuine member service skills.

• Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — required education and training credential
• Provincial Dispensing Optician licence — must be current and in good standing
• Certified Contact Lens Fitter designation — required; those without it must enrol in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year of hire
• Optician and contact lens fitting experience — preferred for a smooth transition into the role
• Computer and math skills — used daily for order processing, inventory, and transactions
