Optical Student – Costco – Kitchener, ON

Costco’s optical department in Kitchener, Ontario is looking for an Optical Student to join their team at the 4438 King Street East location. This is a hands-on role suited for someone currently registered with their provincial college and working toward their optical licence — a great chance to apply your training in a busy, member-focused retail environment.

Day to day, you’ll be helping members find the right eyeglass frames and lens options, processing orders at the till, fitting eyeglasses, and keeping the department stocked and clean. You’ll work under the supervision of a licensed Optician, gaining practical experience while delivering the kind of service Costco members expect.

About the Role: Optical Student

As an Optical Student at Costco Kitchener, your primary focus is supporting members through every stage of the eyewear process — from selecting frames to picking up their finished order. You’ll handle cash and payment processing, assist with frame fittings and adjustments (where permitted by provincial law), and keep merchandise and supplies properly stocked and organized.

You’ll be expected to follow all safety and security procedures, maintain department standards for merchandising and product storage, and pitch in with general warehouse duties when needed. Accuracy, attention to detail, and a courteous approach to member service are central to performing well in this position.

Responsibilities

Working in Costco’s optical department means wearing many hats throughout your shift. From member-facing consultations to behind-the-scenes stocking and cleaning, you’ll play an important role in keeping the department running smoothly and ensuring members leave satisfied with their purchase.

• Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, providing prompt and courteous service
• Process orders and payments accurately, including cash, cheques, credit, and debit transactions following proper cash-handling procedures
• Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending techniques, under the supervision of a licensed Optician and where permitted by provincial law
• Order equipment, merchandise, and supplies by entering requests into the computer system
• Stock merchandise and supplies while maintaining department standards for production, record keeping, merchandising, and product storage
• Clean the department through spraying, wiping, and mopping; empty trash and operate trash compactor and cardboard bailer
• Follow all safety and security procedures at all times
• Assist in other areas of the warehouse as required

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate for this Optical Student role is someone currently enrolled in or registered with an applicable provincial college for optical training. Costco values candidates who bring a member-first attitude, reliability, and the willingness to follow procedures with care and consistency.

• Current provincial optical licence required, along with registration in an applicable college
• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Strong attention to detail for accurate payment processing and order handling

• For positions at Quebec locations, candidates must be able to communicate in both French and English (oral and written)
