About the Role: Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Automated Test Equipment

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll lead the full lifecycle of automated test equipment development — from conceptual design through production deployment. Your work directly affects the quality and reliability of Tesla’s core power electronics technologies, requiring careful attention to both engineering rigour and practical buildability.

  • Architect automated test equipment and produce detailed CAD models and pneumatic diagrams
  • Verify designs using structural and thermal FEA and CFD analysis

  • Identify and implement improvements to performance, robustness, and ease of assembly
  • Analyse system constraints and propose innovative engineering solutions
  • Support equipment building, debugging, validation, and duplication efforts through to production release
  • Conduct detailed testing and validation of installed machinery to ensure quality and robustness
  • Perform on-site and off-site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of test equipment

Requirements / Skills

Tesla is looking for a candidate with proven hands-on experience in mechanical and mechatronics engineering, specifically within automation and machine design. You should be equally comfortable working independently on complex technical problems and collaborating across engineering disciplines in a high-responsibility environment.

  • 6+ years of experience as a Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Automation Engineer with a focus in automation, machine design, robotics, and product development
  • Prototype-to-production experience transitioning products and processes at scale
  • Technical knowledge in solid mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, dynamics, material selection, prototyping, testing methods, machining, and fabrication
  • Exposure to sensors, microcontrollers, robots, and relays in an engineering context
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, and Ansys or equivalent CAD/CAE software
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines
  • Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally to support equipment development and deployment
