About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner

As a Licensed Optician at Costco Kitchener, your day-to-day involves assisting members in choosing the right eyewear based on their prescriptions, fitting and adjusting eyeglasses, processing orders through the computer system, and ensuring all contact lenses and completed eyeglasses meet prescription standards before dispensing. You’ll also handle cash and payment processing accurately, manage inventory and supplies, and keep the department clean and organized to maintain a high standard of optical health care.

Maintaining your provincial licensing and good standing with the provincial order is a requirement of this role. Opticians without contact lens certification must enrol in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year to retain their position. The ability to work collaboratively, mentor apprentices, and uphold Costco’s standards of member service is central to success here.

Responsibilities

The Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner at Costco Kitchener is responsible for delivering accurate, professional optical services to members from start to finish. These duties span clinical assessments, sales, order processing, and department maintenance — making this a well-rounded role for an experienced optical professional.

  • Assist members in selecting appropriate eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options based on their prescriptions
  • Perform measurements including pupillary distance (PD) using a pupilometer or ruler, as well as multi-focal and bifocal heights
  • Examine members’ eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist with contact lens fittings
  • Process orders by entering them into the computer system and placing special orders with outside vendors by telephone
  • Dispense eyeglasses and contact lenses after verifying accuracy against the prescription; fit and adjust frames using a frame warmer and manual adjustments
  • Handle payments accurately including cash, cheques, and credit/debit transactions following proper procedures
  • Maintain inventory of optical merchandise, equipment, and contact lens trials; follow department procedures for record keeping, sales, and product storage
  • Oversee apprentices and students as required to support their certification qualification
  • Maintain provincial licensing to ensure good standing with the provincial order at all times
  • Uphold cleanliness and health care standards throughout the optical department

Requirements / Skills
