Optical Student – Costco – Markham, ON

Costco’s optical department in Markham, Ontario is looking for an Optical Student to join their team at the 65 Kirkham Drive location. In this role, you’ll work directly with Costco members to help them find the right eyeglass frames and lens options, process transactions accurately, and support the overall flow of the optical department. Under the supervision of a licensed Optician, you’ll also assist with fitting and adjusting eyeglasses where permitted by provincial law.

As an Optical Student at Costco Markham, your day-to-day will centre around delivering prompt and courteous member service while supporting the optical team with a variety of tasks. You’ll assist members in selecting eyeglass frames and lens options, ring up orders, process payments accurately — including cash, cheque, credit, and debit — and help receive merchandise and stock supplies. The role also involves ordering equipment and supplies through the computer system and keeping the department clean and organized.

This position emphasizes adherence to safety, security, and departmental procedures, including proper cash handling, record keeping, and merchandising standards. You’ll also be expected to pitch in elsewhere in the warehouse when needed, making flexibility and teamwork key to your success here.

Responsibilities

The Optical Student role at Costco covers a broad range of tasks that keep the optical department running smoothly. From member-facing service to back-end stocking and cleaning, you’ll be an essential part of the team. Here’s what the day-to-day looks like:

• Assist members in selecting eyeglass frame and lens options, providing prompt and courteous service throughout
• Process transactions accurately, including cash, cheque, credit, and debit payments following proper cash handling procedures
• Fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending techniques, under the supervision of a licensed Optician where permitted by provincial law
• Order equipment, merchandise, and supplies by entering data into the computer system
• Stock merchandise and supplies, adhering to departmental standards for production, record keeping, and merchandising
• Maintain department cleanliness through spraying, wiping, mopping, emptying trash, and operating the trash compactor and cardboard bailer
• Follow all safety and security procedures to ensure a compliant and safe work environment
• Assist in other areas of the warehouse as required

Requirements / Skills

Costco is looking for an Optical Student who holds the appropriate provincial registration and is committed to delivering quality service. This role is designed for those actively pursuing their optical education, so prior professional experience is not required — what matters most is your current enrolment and licensure status.

• Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Licence/Certification: Current provincial optical licence required; must be registered in the applicable college program
• Member service skills: Ability to communicate clearly and provide helpful, courteous assistance to customers
• Attention to detail: Accuracy in cash handling and payment processing is essential
• Language (Quebec locations): Candidates applying to Quebec locations must be able to communicate in French (oral and written)
