Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed) – Costco – Markham, ON

Costco’s optical department in Markham, Ontario is looking for a Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner to join their team at the 65 Kirkham Drive location. This is a hands-on clinical and retail role where your provincial licensing and contact lens fitting expertise are put to work every day helping members find the right eyewear solutions.

From fitting frames and measuring pupillary distance to examining eyes with a slit lamp and managing contact lens trials, this position blends technical skill with genuine member service. You’ll also play a mentorship role by overseeing apprentices and students working toward their certifications.

About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner

As a Licensed Optician at Costco Markham, you’ll guide members through the full eyewear selection process — from choosing the right frames, lenses, and contact lenses to ensuring accurate dispensing and proper fitting. You’ll use your technical knowledge to assess prescriptions, determine multifocal and bifocal heights, and ensure every order meets the member’s needs before it leaves the department.

Beyond patient care, you’ll be responsible for processing orders, handling cash and payment transactions, maintaining inventory and stock levels, and keeping the department clean and compliant with health care standards. Maintaining your provincial licensing and good standing with the provincial order is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

• Assist members in selecting appropriate eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options based on their prescriptions
• Measure pupillary distance accurately using a pupilometer or ruler and determine correct multifocal and bifocal heights
• Examine eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist with contact lens fitting
• Process orders using in-store computer systems and place special orders with outside vendors by telephone
• Dispense and fit completed eyeglasses and contact lenses, verifying each order against the prescription before handoff
• Handle transactions accurately including cash, cheque, credit, and debit payments following proper procedures
• Maintain inventory of contact lens trials, optical merchandise, and supplies; stock and organize the department
• Oversee apprentices and students as required to support their certification qualification
• Maintain provincial licensing and good standing with the provincial order at all times
• Uphold cleanliness and safety standards throughout the optical department

Requirements / Skills

• Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — relevant and applicable education/training required
• Provincial Dispensing Optician licence — must be current and in good standing
• Certified Contact Lens Fitter designation — required; opticians without this certification must enrol in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year of hire
• Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Fitter experience — prior professional experience preferred
• Computer and math skills — needed for order entry, inventory, and transaction processing
• Member service skills — ability to provide prompt, accurate, and courteous assistance in a retail healthcare setting
