Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle — from early-stage proof-of-concept work to full-scale production rollout. Your contributions will directly improve equipment effectiveness, manufacturing tolerance, and automation intelligence across Tesla’s global operations.
- Contribute to equipment development to realize new and innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full-scale production
- Drive improvement of equipment effectiveness, manufacturing tolerance, stability, automation, and intelligence
- Create 3D CAD models and detailed drawings with GD&T for manufacturing and assembly, along with mechanical BOMs, safety, and maintenance documentation
- Prepare motion studies for complex designs and conduct FEA studies — applying strong knowledge of dynamics, force and stress analysis, and solid mechanics
- Select and integrate commercial components including sensors, servos, and pneumatic actuators
- Review and provide feedback on performance, design simplicity, robustness, assembly, and installation
- Provide mechanical engineering support to fabrication, assembly, project management, and production teams to troubleshoot design issues and optimize machine performance
Requirements / Skills
Tesla is seeking a seasoned mechanical design professional with strong engineering fundamentals and a genuine passion for hands-on problem solving. The ideal candidate thrives under pressure, takes ownership of their work, and is comfortable operating in a high-responsibility, fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- 7+ years of experience as a hands-on mechanical, manufacturing, or design engineer working on mechanical and/or electromechanical systems
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD, and/or similar CAD/CAE software
- Strong understanding of GD&T and drafting standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5)
- Experience designing mechanical equipment, fixtures, layouts, and tooling in 2D and 3D CAD, including detailed drawings for CNC/manual machining, welding, sheet metal, and 3D printing
- Knowledge of automated equipment systems — robotics, vision systems, material handling, conveyors, PLCs, and solid mechanics including pneumatics, hydraulics, and dynamics
- Exposure to industrial sensors, actuators, and test systems such as pogo-pins, pressure transducers, temperature controllers, and current meters
- Experience with new equipment installations and new product startups; prior experience in high-volume manufacturing is a strong asset
