Mechanical Assembly Technician (Afternoon Shift) – Tesla – Markham, ON

Tesla’s Markham, Ontario facility is on the lookout for a Mechanical Assembly Technician to join their team on the afternoon shift. This is a hands-on, technically demanding role focused on the assembly of a new generation of high-speed, automated manufacturing equipment. About the Role: Mechanical Assembly Technician

Day to day, you’ll be assembling precision machine components, reading and interpreting detailed mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, and pneumatic schematics, and operating machine shop equipment including lathes, mills, and surface grinders. Machining of parts — milling, turning, and grinding — is part of the toolkit when needed.

You’ll also be responsible for moving and staging heavy components using proper lifting and rigging equipment, and for maintaining strict 5S standards on the shop floor and within automation cells. Collaboration, safety awareness, and a methodical approach to troubleshooting and commissioning are essential to this position.

Benefits and Salary

This full-time position includes a 10% afternoon shift premium on top of competitive base pay. Compensation is structured by technician level: Engineering Technician I: $22.00–$33.00/hour, Engineering Technician II: $27.28–$40.92/hour, and Engineering Technician III: $31.46–$47.19/hour, plus cash and stock awards. Responsibilities

Working within Tesla’s Mechanical Assembly Team, you’ll be involved in building and commissioning cutting-edge automated manufacturing equipment from the ground up. Each task requires precision, technical know-how, and a commitment to quality standards that meet Tesla’s high bar for innovation.

• Assemble precision machine components, including machining of parts such as milling, turning, and surface grinding as required
• Interpret detailed mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, vendor component drawings, and pneumatic schematics
• Move and stage heavy part and assembly components using appropriate lifting and rigging techniques and equipment
• Execute mechanical systems start-up, testing, debug, and commissioning activities
• Install and troubleshoot machines on-site and at other Tesla facilities, with 30–60% domestic and international travel
• Maintain strict 5S standards and cleanliness on the shop floor and within automation cells
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the broader assembly team

Requirements / Skills

Tesla is looking for a technically skilled, self-motivated individual who can work independently and accurately in a precision manufacturing environment. Experience with custom automated machinery and a solid command of mechanical trade skills are central to this role.

• Education: Degree or certificate in Mechanical Technology, Toolmaking, Machining, Millwright, a completed apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience
• Experience: 5+ years in the assembly of custom automated machinery or other precision mechanical assembly
• Drawing interpretation: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, mechanical drawings, and pneumatic schematics
• Tools: Familiar with basic hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments (Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges) to tolerances of 0.0254mm (0.001″); must supply your own tools
• Machine shop operation: Experience with lathe, mill, surface grinder, cut-off saw, and band saw
• Travel availability: Must be available to travel 30–60% domestically and internationally; a valid passport is required and must be maintained
• Communication: Strong written and verbal command of English
