About the Role: Maintenance Assistant

As a Maintenance Assistant at the Costco Optical Lab, you’ll be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order across the entire facility — from the production floor and break room to offices and restrooms. You’ll follow a daily schedule of routine tasks, respond to spills and cleaning needs as they arise, and help maintain the grounds around the building.

This role also involves operating equipment like trash and cardboard compactors, managing cleaning supply inventory, and supporting facility upkeep tasks such as painting, concrete floor repairs, and snow removal. Safety and security procedures are central to this position, and you’ll be expected to follow all Optical Lab and general Costco standards at all times.

Responsibilities

The Maintenance Assistant role at Costco’s Optical Lab involves a wide variety of daily tasks that keep the facility safe, clean, and operational. From routine floor care to outdoor grounds maintenance, each responsibility plays an important part in protecting staff and equipment while meeting Costco’s company standards.

• Check daily schedules and carry out routine cleaning tasks across all areas of the facility
• Clean floors in offices, break rooms, restrooms, the production floor, and other facility areas; change scrubber water frequently to minimise dust
• Empty trash from designated areas throughout the Lab and operate trash and cardboard compactors
• Respond promptly to spills and unexpected cleaning needs throughout the workday
• Maintain lighting by cleaning fixtures regularly, changing bulbs, and washing windows, upper walls, and ceilings; vacuum rafters periodically
• Assist with grounds maintenance including blowing leaves, picking up litter, roof checks, snow and ice removal, painting, and concrete floor repairs
• Monitor and restock cleaning supplies as needed and place received merchandise in the appropriate department
• Operate the Interal maintenance system, conduct store inventory, and perform internal and external purchases
• Provide courteous service to members, employees, and suppliers at all times

Requirements / Skills

Costco is looking for a dependable candidate with a practical skillset and a strong work ethic. The right person for this role will be comfortable working independently, following established safety protocols, and completing both routine and unexpected tasks with care and efficiency.

• High School Diploma or GED preferred
• Valid driver’s licence is required for this position
• Janitorial experience is preferred but not mandatory
• Mechanical aptitude is required to carry out facility maintenance tasks effectively
• Manual dexterity is required for hands-on cleaning and maintenance work
• Ability to communicate in French (oral and written) is required for candidates applying to Quebec locations — note this posting is in Richmond, BC
