About the Role: Loss Prevention Clerk

As a Loss Prevention Clerk, your primary focus is protecting Costco’s assets from both internal and external theft. You’ll patrol the warehouse and its perimeter for up to eight hours a day, identifying hazards and security risks, and taking appropriate action when shoplifting or internal dishonesty is detected. This role reports directly to the Warehouse Manager.

Beyond apprehending suspects, you’ll also prepare detailed reports, maintain evidence files, and testify in court when necessary. You’ll play a key role in educating your fellow warehouse team members on loss prevention policies and procedures, and you’ll collaborate with other Costco LP Clerks and neighbouring businesses to stay informed about local theft trends.

Responsibilities

Working as a Loss Prevention Clerk at Costco means staying alert and active throughout your shift. Your responsibilities span everything from proactive floor monitoring to formal investigations and legal proceedings, making thoroughness and professionalism essential to the role.

  • Patrol the warehouse and perimeter for up to 8 hours per day to identify safety and security concerns
  • Observe, detect, and apprehend shoplifters within the warehouse in accordance with Costco procedures and provincial law
  • Detain and interview shoplifting suspects when warranted
  • Identify and report internal dishonesty situations to the Warehouse Manager and Regional Loss Prevention Manager
  • Detect shrink reduction opportunities and report findings to management to improve operational security
  • Prepare reports for internal use and potential prosecution, and maintain organized evidence and investigation files
  • Testify in court regarding theft investigations when required
  • Educate and coach warehouse team members on loss prevention topics, policies, and procedures
  • Collaborate with other Costco LP Clerks and local businesses to share information about current theft threats in the area
  • Assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings real-world loss prevention experience and a thorough knowledge of the relevant Canadian legislation. Strong communication and observational skills are just as important as legal know-how in this role.

  • Valid Loss Prevention Licence as required by the Province of Ontario
  • Loss prevention experience is strongly preferred — candidates with this background will be given preference
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada as it relates to theft and fraud offences, along with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Trespass Act, and Privacy Acts
  • High School Diploma or GED is preferred
  • Strong communication skills — written and verbal — for report writing, interviews, and court testimony
