About the Role: Data Center Technician

As a member of the Technical Infrastructure team at Google, you’ll be responsible for deploying and operating new data center infrastructure, diagnosing equipment issues, and performing both preventative and corrective maintenance on servers, machines, and related systems. A typical shift may involve the manual movement and installation of racks — it’s physically active work in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.

Security and data integrity are critical components of this role. Responsibilities

Working within Google’s data center infrastructure, this role covers a broad range of technical and operational duties. You’ll be expected to work independently as well as collaboratively with cross-functional teams to keep critical systems running reliably and securely.

  • Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across multiple teams
  • Report and troubleshoot complex issues with equipment and infrastructure, applying the appropriate resources to resolve them
  • Maintain data security and integrity by tracking media and ensuring compliance with Google’s security standards
  • Disassemble end-of-life equipment through part replacement or maintenance procedures across one or more teams
  • Repair and perform preventative maintenance on servers, machines, and infrastructure based on identified issues with multiple possible solutions
  • Install and configure hardware including servers, components, routers, hubs, bridges, and switches
  • Lead or participate in small project teams during larger installations and develop project contingency plans

Requirements / Skills

Google is looking for a technically skilled candidate who is comfortable working in a physically demanding, shift-based data center environment. The ideal applicant brings hands-on hardware experience along with strong troubleshooting instincts and a solid understanding of networking fundamentals.

  • Component-level repair experience with technical and IT equipment is required
  • Troubleshooting skills across operating systems, computer hardware, and server hardware

  • Physical fitness requirements: ability to lift/move 50 lbs (23 kg) and sustain physical activity including bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting over extended periods
  • Flexible availability including weekends, night shifts, holidays, and rotating schedules
  • Valid Reliability Status security clearance from the Government of Canada (required before start of employment)
  • Preferred: 4+ years of experience maintaining and monitoring server systems
  • Preferred: Linux operating system experience and familiarity with data center or network operation centre environments
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
