Responsibilities

The Assistant General Counsel is expected to lead from the front — both as a practitioner managing complex legal files and as a manager responsible for the growth and performance of the legal team. These responsibilities span strategic advisory work, team leadership, external counsel management, and contributions to broader organizational improvement efforts.

  • Provide strategic legal advice to all levels of Canada Post Group management, presenting clear options and recommendations on matters of significant corporate risk and value
  • Coach and mentor legal professionals within Legal Affairs, expanding their business acumen and sharpening their ability to deliver outcome-focused, high-quality legal services
  • Foster a positive team culture by setting clear performance expectations, conducting development assessments, and ensuring team members have the support they need to succeed
  • Lead complex legal files within personal areas of expertise, securing outcomes aligned with the Corporation’s specific objectives while balancing risk, speed, and business impact
  • Direct the Legal Affairs team across a broad range of legal fields including labour law, contracts, franchising, intellectual property, and civil litigation
  • Prioritize and allocate files among legal professionals to optimize capacity, balance workloads, and maintain timely, responsive service delivery
  • Oversee the selection and management of outside counsel to ensure legal service requirements are met cost-effectively and in alignment with business objectives

Requirements / Skills
