About the Role: Software Development Engineer II

As an SDE II on the Workforce Optimization team, you’ll be involved in every phase of the software development lifecycle — from scoping and design through to implementation, testing, and delivery. You’ll partner closely with product managers, user experience designers, and fellow engineers to build systems that aggregate FC state data and help operators make smarter staffing decisions. These aren’t incremental improvements; this is foundational infrastructure that powers Amazon’s fulfillment network worldwide.

Beyond writing code, you’ll also play a leadership role on the team — mentoring junior engineers and raising the technical bar across the group. Benefits and Salary

The base salary range for this position in Toronto is $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs), with final compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities

Day to day, you’ll be designing and building large-scale distributed systems that serve Fulfillment Centres across the globe. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional partners, own your deliverables end-to-end, and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence — all while keeping the customer experience front and centre.

• Design and implement large-scale, fault-tolerant distributed systems that support real-time labour planning and staffing in Amazon’s fulfillment network
• Own the full software development lifecycle including scoping, architecture, coding, testing, and production delivery
• Build data aggregation systems that provide an end-to-end view of Fulfillment Centre state to enable smarter operational decisions
• Partner with product managers, UX designers, and other engineering teams to align on requirements and deliver cohesive solutions
• Mentor junior engineers by reviewing their code, sharing best practices, and helping raise the overall technical bar of the team
• Contribute to system reliability and scalability by applying strong design patterns and architectural thinking to both new and existing systems
• Drive visibility and impact through highly visible, innovative projects that directly affect the Amazon customer experience

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings a solid foundation in professional software development and has experience designing systems that scale. Amazon is looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with the interpersonal skills needed to collaborate effectively and lift those around them.

• 3+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship), demonstrating a track record of shipping production-quality code
• 2+ years of experience in system design or architecture covering design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
• Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional software development context
• Full software development lifecycle experience (preferred) including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, and operations
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent (preferred)
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across product, design, and engineering functions
