About the Role: Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, On-Call Relief

As a Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, your primary responsibility is the sorting, collecting, and delivering of mail items across assigned routes in St. Thomas and surrounding areas. You’ll need to develop a solid knowledge of local roads, customer locations, and delivery receptacles to carry out your routes efficiently and accurately.

This role requires you to follow Canada Post’s safety standards at all times — from securing mail in your possession to wearing your Canada Post identification visibly while on delivery. You’ll also process various Canada Post products and services, including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB). Physical fitness matters here too, as the job involves lifting and carrying items up to 50 lb (22.7 kg).

• Sort, collect, and deliver mail items in a safe and timely manner across rural and suburban routes
• Acquire and maintain thorough knowledge of local roads, customers, and delivery receptacles
• Secure all mail properly in your possession throughout the duration of each shift
• Process Canada Post products and services including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB)
• Wear Canada Post identification visibly while delivering and collecting mail from customers
• Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lb / 22.7 kg as required
• Operate a motor vehicle safely across all types of weather and traffic conditions

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate is someone who takes pride in reliability and attention to detail, and is comfortable working independently on the road. Canada Post values individuals who can manage their time well and maintain professionalism while representing the organization in their communities. Applicants residing within 75 km of the St. Thomas Post Office are preferred.

• Valid permanent provincial driver’s licence — Class 5 or G required
• Satisfactory safe driving record — a current driver’s abstract dated within the last 30 days will be required if selected
• Access to an eligible vehicle with a minimum cargo capacity of 50 cu ft (1,415 litres), automatic transmission, power windows, a metal rooftop, and accessory power outlet
• Automobile liability insurance — you must provide and maintain appropriate coverage and notify your insurer of your vehicle’s use while employed at Canada Post
• Experience making deliveries and operating a motor vehicle in varied weather and traffic conditions
• Ability to pass an interview and provide required documentation upon selection
