As an on-call relief mail carrier, your day revolves around getting mail safely and efficiently to the people who are counting on it. You’ll sort outgoing and incoming items, navigate local roads in all weather conditions, and build familiarity with your delivery area over time. This is hands-on, independent work that requires strong organizational skills and a reliable vehicle.

You’ll represent Canada Post in the field — wearing your identification visibly, handling items with care, and following all safety protocols. The role also includes processing Canada Post products and services such as Change of Address Notifications and Damaged Mail handling. Physical readiness matters here, as you’ll be lifting and carrying items up to 50 lb (22.7 kg).

Responsibilities

Each day as a Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier with Canada Post involves navigating your delivery route with care and professionalism. From sorting at the start of your shift to completing the last drop-off, reliability and attention to detail are at the core of everything you do.

• Sort, collect, and deliver mail items in a safe and timely manner
• Build and maintain knowledge of local roads, customers, and delivery receptacles in your area
• Secure all mail in your possession throughout the delivery process
• Process Canada Post products and services including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB)
• Wear Canada Post identification visibly while delivering and collecting mail from customers
• Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lb (22.7 kg)
• Operate a motor vehicle safely in all weather and traffic conditions

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who takes pride in independent, reliable work and is comfortable behind the wheel in a variety of conditions. Canada Post values safety, accountability, and a genuine commitment to serving the communities along your route.

• Valid permanent provincial driver’s licence — Class 5 or Class G required
• Satisfactory safe driving record — a driver’s abstract will be required
• Experience making deliveries and operating a vehicle in varying weather and traffic conditions
• Personal vehicle meeting mandatory requirements: minimum 50 cu ft (1,415 litres) cargo capacity, automatic transmission, power windows, metal roof with accessory power outlet, passenger window sill height between 38″–45″ from the ground, max 56″ interior width, and a fifth door/hatchback (preferred)
• Automobile liability insurance for personal vehicle use during employment, with notification to your insurer
• Reside within 75 km of the Smiths Falls Post Office (preferred)
