Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Registered Pharmacy Technician handles a broad range of clinical and administrative duties. From filling prescriptions and processing insurance claims to managing inventory and providing front-counter member service, this role keeps the pharmacy running smoothly and safely.
- Assist patients at the counter, receive written prescriptions for the pharmacist, and retrieve filled prescriptions
- Process register transactions including payments, change, cheques, and credit/debit charges
- Maintain patient records by obtaining medical histories and entering prescription information into the pharmacy computer system in accordance with provincial regulations
- Fill prescriptions by retrieving stock bottles, counting medication, labelling, and pricing under pharmacist supervision
- Complete packaging verification for prescriptions previously reviewed by the pharmacist for therapeutic appropriateness
- Alert the pharmacist to potential drug interactions in prescription and over-the-counter medications
- Process third-party insurance claims, invoices, and accounting entries using a computerized system
- Order, receive, tag, and stock prescription drugs, supplies, and OTC products; maintain department cleanliness and merchandising standards
- Verify prescriptions and refills with physicians by phone and take verbal prescriptions as permitted by provincial regulations
Requirements / Skills
The ideal candidate holds a valid Pharmacy Technician licence in Ontario and brings both the technical knowledge and the people skills to excel in a high-volume pharmacy setting. - Provincial Pharmacy Technician certification — completed through a Community College Pharmacy Technician program
