Package Handler – FedEx – Nepean (Ottawa), ON

FedEx is hiring a Package Handler at their facility located at 1031 Moodie Dr, Nepean (Ottawa), Ontario. This is a hands-on warehouse-style role where you’ll be part of the team that keeps one of Canada’s most recognized logistics networks running smoothly, shift after shift.

This position involves the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages in a fast-moving environment. Whether you’re scanning shipments, palletizing freight, or rotating through various dock positions, every shift plays a direct role in getting packages to their destinations on time.

About the Role: Package Handler

As a Package Handler (PH) with Federal Express Corporation Canada, you’ll be responsible for the safe and efficient physical movement of packages — lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing shipments by hand throughout your shift. PHs may be assigned to or rotate through roles such as Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, SWAK (Scan Weigh and Key), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, or Switcher. Depending on experience, you may also be considered for specialized roles including Package Handler Trainer or Package Handler – Air.

Working at a FedEx sort facility means operating in a dynamic, team-oriented setting where safety standards, communication, and physical stamina are essential. You’ll use hand-held scanners, dock carts, and conveyor systems while following established safety protocols. Responsibilities

Package Handlers at FedEx are the backbone of the daily sort operation. From the moment a shift begins, you’ll be moving, scanning, and sorting shipments using safe and efficient hand-to-surface handling methods. These responsibilities are central to keeping the supply chain moving without delays or errors.

• Load and unload packages onto and from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor systems, carts, and load gratings
• Lift, carry, push, and pull packages on a continuous and repetitive basis throughout shifts of approximately 3–5 hours
• Scan packages and read labels, charts, and numbers to determine the correct conveyor routing and sort accordingly
• Apply hand-to-surface methods for all package handling in compliance with FedEx safety standards
• Train other Package Handlers (PH Trainer role) in unloading, loading, palletizing, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable techniques
• Inspect packages (PH – Air role) for Hazardous Materials or ORM-D designation and complete required documentation in SCMS
• Reinforce dock safety standards among peers and update management on sort conditions as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned by management

Requirements / Skills

• Physical capability to lift and carry packages weighing between 5 and 50 lbs on a continuous basis
• Ability to understand and follow instructions regarding work duties and safety procedures
• Numerical literacy to accurately read labels and sort packages to the correct destination
• Comfort using basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, hand-held scanners, and unloading devices
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team setting
• Valid driver’s licence required for PHs operating switching equipment (must maintain a DOT file)
• PH – Air candidates must complete and maintain FedEx Airlift Consolidation Gateway Training and government-regulated Indirect Air Carrier (IAC) training with annual recertification
• Candidates in Quebec must be bilingual in French and English
