About the Role: Package Handler

As a Package Handler, your primary responsibility is the physical loading, unloading, and sorting of packages by hand. You’ll work across various positions within the operation, including Loader, Unloader, Palletizer, Scan Weigh and Key (SWAK), Quality Assurance (QA), Facer, and Switcher, depending on daily assignment and business needs. All package handling is done using the standard “hand-to-surface” method to maintain safety and efficiency throughout each shift.

Package Handlers may also be selected for specialized roles such as Package Handler Trainer — responsible for coaching peers on proper technique and dock safety — or Package Handler – Air, which involves a multi-step inspection process to ensure compliance with air transport regulations. Both assignments require six months of experience with FedEx and additional specialized training.

Responsibilities

This role keeps you active and engaged throughout each shift, with tasks that are essential to the smooth flow of the entire operation. Package Handlers are expected to work safely and efficiently across multiple station types, adapting as business needs require.

  • Load and unload packages onto and from delivery vehicles, trailers, pallets, conveyor system carts, and load gratings
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull packages on a continuous and repetitive basis during a 3–5 hour shift, with potential for multiple shifts daily
  • Sort packages by scanning labels, reading charts, verifying numbers, and memorizing routing information to determine the correct conveyor line
  • Apply hand-to-surface methods for all package handling to maintain safety standards
  • Train peer Package Handlers (Trainer role) on loading, unloading, palletizing, smalls handling, SWAK, and non-conveyable techniques
  • Inspect packages in the airlift consolidation area (Air role) for hazardous materials or ORM-D designations and complete required documentation in SCMS
  • Reinforce dock safety standards and update management on operational conditions during the sort

Requirements / Skills

FedEx is looking for individuals who are physically capable, attentive to detail, and comfortable working in a fast-paced warehouse environment. No prior experience is required for the standard Package Handler role — what matters most is your ability to follow instructions, work safely as part of a team, and adapt across different stations.

  • Full G driver’s licence — required for this posting
