Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed) – Costco – Orillia, ON

Costco’s optical department in Orillia, Ontario is looking for a Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner to join their team at the 625 University Ave location. This is a hands-on role for a credentialed professional who takes pride in delivering high-quality optical care and member service in a busy retail healthcare setting.

Day to day, you’ll be helping members find the right frames, lenses, and contact lenses to suit their prescriptions, performing fittings, processing orders, and overseeing apprentices — all while maintaining the accuracy and care standards that Costco’s optical department is known for.

About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed)

This position covers the full scope of optical dispensing work. You’ll be assisting members in selecting eyeglass frames, ophthalmic lenses, sunglasses, and contact lenses, and ensuring every order is filled accurately from start to finish. You’ll use a slit lamp to assess ocular health, take precise pupillary distance measurements, determine multi-focal and bifocal heights, and fit and adjust eyeglasses using proper tools and techniques.

Beyond direct member care, you’ll be responsible for maintaining contact lens trial inventory, processing payments, placing special orders with outside vendors, and upholding safety, cleanliness, and health care standards throughout the department. You’ll also play a mentorship role by overseeing apprentices and students working toward their certification qualifications.

Responsibilities

Working in Costco’s optical department means wearing many hats — from precision clinical tasks like contact lens fittings and ocular assessments to member-facing service and retail operations. • Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options suited to their prescriptions
• Measure pupillary distance accurately using a pupilometer or ruler, and determine correct placement of multi-focal and bifocal heights
• Examine eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist in contact lens fitting
• Process member orders via computer, place special orders with outside vendors by telephone, and key in receipt of incoming orders
• Dispense and verify completed eyeglasses and contact lenses against prescription before fitting and adjusting frames to each member
• Handle payments accurately, including cash, cheques, credit, and debit, following proper cash handling procedures
• Maintain contact lens trial inventory and stock optical merchandise and supplies following department standards
• Oversee apprentices and students as required for their certification qualifications
• Maintain provincial licensing requirements to ensure membership in the provincial order remains in good standing
• Uphold cleanliness and safety standards throughout the optical department at all times

Requirements / Skills

Costco is looking for a fully licensed optical professional who brings both technical expertise and genuine member service skills to the role. The ideal candidate holds active provincial credentials and has real-world experience in a dispensing or contact lens fitting environment.

• Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — relevant education and training required
• Provincial License as a Dispensing Optician — must be current and in good standing
• Certified Contact Lens Fitter designation — required; opticians without this certification must enrol in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year
• Experience as a Licensed Optician and Contact Lens Fitter — prior hands-on experience in the field is preferred
• Computer, math, and member service skills — proficiency in optical order systems and customer-facing communication
• French language ability — required for candidates applying to Quebec locations (oral and written)
