About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed)

Responsibilities

Day to day, this role blends clinical optical practice with member-facing service and departmental upkeep. From conducting precise measurements to processing orders and mentoring apprentices, the scope of this position is broad and requires strong multitasking ability alongside technical dispensing skills.

  • Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options appropriate to their prescription
  • Measure members for pupillary distance (PD) accurately using a pupilometer or ruler, and determine correct placement of multifocal and bifocal heights
  • Examine members’ eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist in fitting contact lenses
  • Process orders via computer, including placing special orders with outside vendors by telephone and ringing up optical merchandise
  • Verify completed eyeglasses and contact lenses against prescriptions prior to dispensing; fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending
  • Handle payments accurately, including cash, cheques, credit, and debit charges in accordance with proper procedures
  • Oversee apprentices and students as required for their certification qualification
  • Maintain contact lens trial inventory, department displays, merchandise stock, and a high standard of healthcare cleanliness at all times
  • Uphold provincial licensing requirements to ensure membership in the provincial order remains in good standing
