About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed)

As a Licensed Optician at Costco Burlington, you’ll be the primary point of contact for members navigating their eyewear choices. You’ll apply your dispensing expertise to help members select ophthalmic frames, lenses, and contact lenses that match their prescriptions and lifestyle needs. Accuracy is paramount — from measuring pupillary distance to verifying completed eyeglasses against prescriptions before dispensing.

Beyond direct member care, this role involves overseeing apprentices and students working toward their certification, maintaining proper contact lens trial inventory, and upholding departmental standards for cleanliness, record-keeping, and product storage. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining your provincial licence in good standing throughout your employment.

Responsibilities

Day to day, this role blends clinical optical practice with member-facing service and departmental upkeep. From conducting precise measurements to processing orders and mentoring apprentices, the scope of this position is broad and requires strong multitasking ability alongside technical dispensing skills.

• Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options appropriate to their prescription
• Measure members for pupillary distance (PD) accurately using a pupilometer or ruler, and determine correct placement of multifocal and bifocal heights
• Examine members’ eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist in fitting contact lenses
• Process orders via computer, including placing special orders with outside vendors by telephone and ringing up optical merchandise
• Verify completed eyeglasses and contact lenses against prescriptions prior to dispensing; fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending
• Handle payments accurately, including cash, cheques, credit, and debit charges in accordance with proper procedures
• Oversee apprentices and students as required for their certification qualification
• Maintain contact lens trial inventory, department displays, merchandise stock, and a high standard of healthcare cleanliness at all times
• Uphold provincial licensing requirements to ensure membership in the provincial order remains in good standing

• Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — relevant provincial credential is required for this position
• Provincial Dispensing Optician licence — must be current and in good standing
• Certified Contact Lens Fitter designation — required; opticians without this certification must enrol in the Contact Lens Fitter course within one year of hire
• Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Fitter experience — prior hands-on experience in a dispensing role is preferred
• Computer, math, and member service skills — proficiency in order processing systems and accurate handling of transactions is preferred
• French language communication — candidates applying to Quebec locations must be able to communicate in French (oral and written)
