Canadian Tire Corporation is looking for a Data Scientist to join their team in Calgary, Alberta. This is an interdisciplinary analytics role that sits at the intersection of finance, store operations, and advanced data science — offering a rare chance to make a measurable impact across SportChek and Mark’s, two of Canada’s best-known retail brands.

In this position, you’ll be deeply involved in store labour planning, compensation model design, and analytical support for strategic initiatives. About the Role: Data Scientist

Day to day, you’ll be managing store payroll spend analysis, leading planning and budgeting activities, and identifying opportunities for operational efficiency and revenue growth across 550+ retail locations. You’ll leverage store financial data — including income statement data — to build models and dashboards that actually get used at the decision-making level.

This role also puts you at the forefront of automation and self-serve analytics, building tools that empower store teams to drive value on their own. There’s a real opportunity here to grow your expertise in machine learning, predictive analytics, and cloud-based data platforms as they apply to real-world finance and operations problems.

Responsibilities

As a Data Scientist at Canadian Tire, your work will directly shape how store labour and payroll are managed across the SportChek and Mark’s banners. You’ll combine financial analysis, forecasting, and automation to support decisions that affect hundreds of store locations coast to coast.

• Manage Store Payroll Spend across SportChek and Mark’s, ensuring financial targets are met through data-driven insights
• Identify operational efficiencies and revenue growth opportunities by analyzing store-level data and implementing actionable changes
• Lead compensation plan model design and target setting to drive performance of strategic metrics
• Participate in planning meetings to support ongoing business initiatives and strategic projects
• Build self-serve analytics tools that enable value-generating activities across 550+ retail locations
• Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams to develop shared analytics that meet common business objectives
• Oversee analytical processes leveraging store financial data, including income statement analysis
• Present findings and reports to audiences ranging from store managers to senior executives

Requirements / Skills

The ideal candidate brings a strong mix of analytical rigour and business acumen, with the ability to communicate complex findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Canadian Tire values people who are comfortable with large datasets, thrive under tight deadlines, and can see the strategic big picture within a complex retail environment.

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a business, analytics, or finance role
• Python, SQL, or other coding languages with hands-on experience in Azure Synapse and/or Databricks
• Strong communication skills — ability to present analysis confidently to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Problem solving and strategic thinking — ability to manage multiple projects and deliver results under pressure
• Experience with BI tools such as PowerBI or Tableau is considered an asset
• Knowledge of data management tools such as Knime or Alteryx is an asset
• Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA, CMA) or a master’s degree in MMA, MBA, or analytics is an asset
• Prior experience in machine learning or predictive analytics is an asset
