About the Role: Data Center Operation Technician
As a DCEO at AWS, your core focus will be ensuring that data centre equipment supporting mission-critical servers maintains better than 99.999% uptime. The systems you’ll oversee include standby diesel generators, switchboards, UPS systems, PDUs, AHUs, CRAHs, CRACs, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems. You’ll serve as a technical resource across AWS data centre locations, coordinating vendor work and supporting planned maintenance activities.
This role also requires you to obtain and maintain an active Reliability Status security clearance with the Government of Canada. Beyond technical duties, you’ll play a key part in mentoring new team members, participating in incident response drills, and contributing to cost-reduction initiatives through innovative solutions. Responsibilities
Day to day, Data Center Operation Technicians at AWS keep a close eye on the systems and alarms that power one of the world’s largest cloud infrastructures. The work is both reactive and proactive — from coordinating scheduled maintenance to responding quickly when something goes wrong. These responsibilities are central to maintaining the high availability standards that AWS customers depend on.
- Monitor alarms and systems managing power, cooling, and fire suppression within the data centre
- Coordinate on-site vendor work to ensure equipment maintenance is completed and uptime is preserved
- Support other teams and sites during planned events and operational activities
- Handle rack installations and the powering up of new and existing equipment
- Facilitate the commissioning and handover of new equipment into operational service
- Mentor and share knowledge with newer team members to build overall team capability
- Participate in incident response drills to stay prepared for real-world events
- Contribute to cost-reduction efforts through innovative operational solutions
Requirements / Skills
AWS is looking for a technically grounded candidate who is comfortable working with electrical and mechanical systems in a high-stakes environment. - 1+ year of electrical or mechanical experience in a relevant technical environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (1+ year, or minimum 6 months of experience)
- Eligibility for Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance — required and must be maintained throughout employment
- 2+ years of data centre engineering experience is considered a strong asset
- Post-secondary education (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree) is preferred but not required
- Professional Engineering registration or experience in design review involving electrical, mechanical, or automation controls is an asset
