Role of the Student Researcher

As a Student Researcher, your work will involve collaborating on cutting-edge research projects that tackle real-world, large-scale problems. You’ll engage in various areas of computer science, such as Natural Language Understanding, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Deep Learning, and more. Your research will contribute directly to the development of next-generation technologies used in Google’s products and services.

You’ll also have the opportunity to publish your work and contribute to major conferences or journals, further establishing your presence in the research community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in research: Develop innovative solutions to complex, large-scale problems.
  • Collaborate with teams: Work closely with Google research scientists and developers on exploratory projects.
  • Contribute to the research community: Publish papers and present your findings at major conferences or in journals.
  • Programming: Utilize programming languages such as Python, Java, or C/C++ in your research.
  • Innovate: Engage in open-ended projects that require creative thinking and problem-solving.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field.
  • Experience in one or more areas of computer science, such as Natural Language Understanding, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Deep Learning, Algorithmic Foundations of Optimization, Quantum Information Science, Data Science, Software Development, or similar areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time degree program and returning to the program after completion of the internship.
  • Currently attending a degree program in Canada.
  • Experience as a researcher, including internships, full-time positions, or work in a lab setting.
  • Experience contributing to research communities or efforts, including publishing papers in major conferences or journals.
  • Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript, C/C++, etc.).

Working Conditions

This position requires you to be located in Canada for the duration of the engagement. You will have the option to work from Google offices in Waterloo, ON, Montreal, QC, or Toronto, ON.

The program offers flexibility in terms of time commitment and working location, with opportunities for both on-site and remote work, depending on project needs.
