Amazon’s Tax Platform Services team in Vancouver, BC is hiring a Software Development Engineer to help power one of the world’s largest transactional distributed systems. This is a role where your code runs thousands of times per second — calculating sales tax and VAT for every Amazon sale, physical and digital, across the globe.

About the Role: Software Development Engineer
As part of the Amazon Tax Platform Services team, you’ll contribute across the full software development and deployment lifecycle — from design and development through to testing, documentation, and ongoing operations. The platform provides core tax calculation services for all of Amazon’s global sales channels, ensuring accurate tax amounts are presented to customers at checkout and that audit records are maintained in compliance with tax laws worldwide.
You’ll work in a Java, Linux, and Oracle-based environment and be expected to bring strong verbal and written communication skills to the table. The team operates under high load and values engineers who are self-driven, collaborative, and committed to delivering high-quality results. Benefits and Salary
The base salary for this position ranges from $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually in Vancouver, BC. As a total compensation company, Amazon’s package may also include sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), with final compensation determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll be deeply involved in building and maintaining the systems that keep Amazon’s global tax calculations accurate and reliable at massive scale. Every day involves working on complex, distributed infrastructure where precision and performance are non-negotiable — your contributions will directly impact millions of transactions.
- Design and develop scalable, reliable services within a high-throughput distributed tax calculation platform
- Contribute across the full SDLC, including architecture, coding, code reviews, testing, deployment, and operations
- Write and maintain documentation to support technical clarity across the team
- Ensure correctness of tax calculations across Amazon’s global sales channels, including both physical and digital products
- Operate and monitor mission-critical systems managing hundreds of millions of records under high load
- Collaborate with peers and stakeholders across Amazon’s full range of business units on new features and platform improvements
- Maintain compliance with global tax law requirements by ensuring audit records are stored accurately and securely
Requirements / Skills
Amazon Tax Platform Services is looking for engineers who are comfortable operating in complex environments and who take ownership of the systems they build. The ideal candidate brings solid experience with distributed systems design, a strong command of at least one programming language, and the communication skills to work effectively across a large, cross-functional organization.
- 3+ years of professional software development experience (non-internship) demonstrating hands-on engineering ability
- 2+ years of experience in system design or architecture, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems
- Programming proficiency in at least one software language (Java experience is an asset given the team’s stack)
- Full SDLC experience including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations — 3+ years preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent — preferred
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work independently in a self-driven manner
