About the Role: Software Development Engineer

Benefits and Salary

The base salary for this position in Toronto ranges from $114,800 to $191,800 CAD annually. As part of Amazon’s total compensation package, there may also be sign-on payments and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, basic life and AD&D), a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), a Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP), paid time off, and additional resources to support health and well-being.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll own work across the full development lifecycle — designing solutions, shipping them to production, and keeping them running reliably. The scope spans AI-powered agentic systems, security infrastructure, and customer-facing tooling that impacts hundreds of thousands of associates daily.

  • Design and deliver features end-to-end, from technical design through production deployment and operational support
  • Build scalable components that process customer interaction data, applying generative AI techniques to surface meaningful patterns and personalized insights
  • Contribute to architectural decisions that balance innovation with operational excellence
  • Participate in code reviews, actively raising the quality bar for yourself and your teammates
  • Write clear technical documentation including design proposals, operational runbooks, and post-incident reviews
  • Integrate generative AI and LLMs into production systems with guidance from senior engineers
  • Design and implement APIs and data models that support extensibility and long-term growth
  • Build monitoring and alerting to ensure the reliability of systems you own
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, UX designers, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into well-scoped solutions
  • Identify and drive improvements to engineering processes, tooling, and operational practices within the team

Requirements / Skills

Amazon is looking for a software engineer who brings solid hands-on development experience and a genuine interest in working with emerging AI technologies. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, values technical rigour, and is comfortable contributing to large-scale distributed systems.

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of experience in design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language used in a professional context
  • Full software development lifecycle experience including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent background (preferred)
  • Experience debugging and profiling software in large-scale systems (preferred)
  • Familiarity with Large Language Model fundamentals, including prompt engineering, model evaluation, and integrating AI services into production applications (preferred)
