About the Role: Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, On-call Relief

As an on-call relief carrier, your primary responsibility is the safe and timely sorting, collection, and delivery of mail across your assigned routes. You’ll need to develop a solid working knowledge of local roads, addresses, and delivery receptacles to keep things running smoothly each day.

The role also requires you to process a range of Canada Post products and services, including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail handling, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB). You’ll wear your Canada Post identification at all times while on delivery and ensure it’s clearly visible to customers. Importantly, this position may open doors: on-call employees may be eligible to apply for upcoming permanent Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier positions.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for managing your mail delivery route efficiently and safely, while ensuring all items are handled with care. These responsibilities reflect the core of what makes a reliable carrier — organization, local knowledge, and a commitment to serving the community.

  • Sort, collect, and deliver mail items in a safe and timely manner across assigned routes
  • Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of local infrastructure, including roads, customers, and delivery receptacles
  • Secure all mail safely in your possession throughout the delivery process
  • Process Canada Post products and services including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB)
  • Wear and display Canada Post identification at all times while delivering and collecting mail
  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lb / 22.7 kg as needed
  • Operate a motor vehicle safely in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions

Requirements / Skills

  • Valid permanent provincial driver’s licence (Class 5 or G) with a satisfactory safe driving record
  • Personal vehicle meeting Canada Post specifications: minimum 50 cu ft (1,415 L) cargo capacity, automatic transmission, power windows, metal roof-top, accessory power outlet, and interior window sill height between 38″ and 45″ from the ground
  • Automobile liability insurance for use of your personal vehicle while employed, with your insurer notified of this use
  • Experience making deliveries and operating a vehicle in various weather and traffic conditions
  • French language proficiency (French Essential requirement)
  • Ability to pass an interview and provide a current driver’s abstract dated within the last 30 days
