About the Role: Operations Manager
As the Operations Manager in Calgary, you’ll hold overall responsibility for the efficiency and effectiveness of the Gateway facility. That means setting customer service performance standards, ensuring on-time delivery, overseeing scanning compliance, and managing the facility’s profit plan. You’ll work closely with regulatory bodies including CBSA, Transport Canada, FAA, and IATA to ensure full compliance with both import and export regulations.
Leading a team of 5 supervisors and 135 frontline employees, you’ll apply strong people management skills within a Collective Agreement framework. You’ll champion safety, enforce company standards on Occupational Health & Safety and Transport of Dangerous Goods, and continuously drive improvement across the operation through measurement, coaching, and structured decision-making.

Responsibilities
In this senior operations role, your day-to-day work spans people leadership, regulatory compliance, financial management, and service quality. You’ll be the central point of accountability for a busy Gateway facility, balancing operational demands with strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee all Gateway operations including import, export, airside, line haul, and parcel sort processes
- Establish and maintain superior customer service performance indicators, meeting or exceeding standards for on-time delivery, dispatch, and claims handling
- Ensure compliance with import/export regulations, working directly with CBSA, Transport Canada, FAA, and IATA, including managing audit processes and addressing deficiencies
- Lead and develop a team of 5 supervisors and 135 frontline employees through effective communication, motivation, and performance management
- Manage labour relations through proper application of the Collective Agreement, handling all local HR issues in partnership with the HR team
- Monitor and improve EBIT through revenue growth, cost management, and oversight of P&U.D. costs and on-time data entry
- Prepare and submit the service centre profit plan and assist in developing short- and long-range operational objectives
- Implement and maintain Track and Trace technology, ensuring scanning compliance across pick-up, delivery, on-hand, and multi-piece shipment linking
- Identify and track route service standards, adjusting operations to optimize driver costs, stops per hour, and departure times
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives and champion branch track & trace targets
- Manage outlying depots as required, including travel to those locations
Requirements / Skills
The ideal candidate brings proven senior management experience in a medium-to-large service company — ideally in transportation or logistics — combined with solid knowledge of working within a unionized environment. DHL values leaders who are analytically sharp, people-focused, and capable of managing complex operations under pressure.
- 3–5 years of management experience in a medium to large service company, preferably in transportation or logistics
- University degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional experience
- Proven experience in unionized environments, including application of Collective Agreements and negotiation skills
- Strong financial acumen with demonstrated experience in accounting, finance, and administration
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills — both written and verbal — with the ability to lead large, diverse teams
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to implement measurement frameworks and achieve goals within time constraints
- Experience implementing quality and process improvement initiatives
- Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software
