Google is looking for PhD students across Canada to join its Student Researcher Program for Fall 2026. With positions available in Waterloo, Toronto, and Montreal, this is a chance to work on meaningful research alongside some of the world’s leading scientists and developers — all while continuing your graduate studies.
This isn’t a traditional internship. The Student Researcher Program is designed to align graduate students with real research projects tied to Google’s scientific priorities. Depending on the team and project, arrangements are flexible in time commitment, duration, and location — making it genuinely compatible with the demands of doctoral study.
About the Role: Student Researcher, PhD
As a Student Researcher, you’ll be embedded in one of Google’s many research teams — including Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud — where you’ll contribute to exploratory, large-scale research projects. These projects tackle real-world problems and push the boundaries of computing, AI, and scientific advancement. The goal is to find the right project match for your skills and interests, so you’ll be considered across all relevant research teams when you apply.
Collaboration is at the heart of this program. You’ll work alongside research scientists, software developers, and engineers to drive breakthrough technologies and contribute to areas ranging from machine learning and natural language understanding to quantum information science and data science. English proficiency is required for all participants, given the global nature of Google’s teams.
Benefits and Salary

Responsibilities
Day-to-day work in this role centres on conducting and contributing to original research that addresses real-world, large-scale challenges. The work is exploratory by nature — you’ll be expected to bring intellectual curiosity and technical rigour to projects that genuinely push the field forward.
- Participate in research projects focused on developing solutions to complex, large-scale real-world problems
- Collaborate with team members across Google’s research divisions, including Google DeepMind, Google Research, and Google Cloud

- Apply advanced knowledge in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, or related fields

Requirements / Skills
This program is tailored for doctoral students who are deeply engaged in technical research and looking to apply their expertise in a real industry setting. Google values candidates who bring both academic depth and a collaborative spirit to their work.
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Economics, Natural Sciences, or a related technical field
- Experience in at least one area of computer science such as Natural Language Understanding, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, or similar
- Returning to degree program after the engagement (this role is non-conversion eligible and not intended for those seeking full-time employment immediately after)
- Currently attending a degree program in Canada and able to remain located in Canada for the full duration of the engagement
- Programming experience in one or more general-purpose languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or C/C++ (preferred)
- Research community contributions such as published papers in major conferences or journals (preferred)
- English proficiency required for effective global collaboration
