Day to day, you’ll be working within the Data Reliability Engineering team, responsible for managing Voldemort key-value distributed database infrastructure across both on-premise bare metal and public cloud platforms. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally with teams spanning store and commerce, search, and recommendations — building platforms that deliver personalized and non-personalized data at very low latencies.

About the Role: Site Reliability Engineer

The ASE SRE team builds applications and tooling that are safe, reliable, scalable, and fast. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you’ll take ownership of all aspects of distributed database infrastructure, including deployment automation, maintenance, backup, observability, and telemetry. You’ll work closely with engineers across Apple to define metrics, set targets, and uncover optimization opportunities that keep Apple’s services running flawlessly at scale.

Apple offers a competitive total compensation package for this role. The base pay range is $119,100 to $230,500 CAD, depending on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Beyond base pay, employees have the opportunity to participate in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs, including eligibility for restricted stock unit award recommendations and the ability to purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll be hands-on with distributed database infrastructure management and reliability engineering across Apple’s service platforms. Your work will directly impact the availability and performance of Apple Media Applications and services used by millions of customers globally.

  • Manage and deploy Voldemort key-value distributed database infrastructure on bare metal and public cloud (EC2) platforms
  • Develop automation to remove operational toil and improve deployment pipelines, backup processes, and recovery workflows
  • Monitor and alert on system health using observability and telemetry tools; prepare alert handling procedures and run-books
  • Lead incident management — respond to, investigate, and resolve production incidents with a focus on minimizing downtime
  • Define metrics and set targets in collaboration with engineers across Apple to uncover performance optimization opportunities
  • Design and maintain multi-datacenter systems with an understanding of networking topologies, host placement strategies, and failure domains
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with ASE teams including store, commerce, search, and recommendations to build scalable platform services
  • Contribute to platform evolution by implementing new technologies and bringing innovative ideas that improve reliability and performance

Requirements / Skills

Apple is looking for a self-motivated, inquisitive engineer who has a solid foundation in reliability engineering and distributed systems, and who thrives when tackling complex, cross-organizational technical challenges. You should be comfortable working in a distributed team and excel under tight deadlines.

  • Education: BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • 2–5 years of experience in a Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused role
  • Distributed systems knowledge: understanding of consistency models, isolation levels, crash and recovery semantics
  • Production operations experience: supporting internet-facing services via deployments, on-call rotations, and incident management
  • Datacenter architecture knowledge: networking topologies, host placement strategies, failure modes, and wide-area networking
  • Performance engineering skills: design concepts and profile-guided optimization
  • Programming proficiency: Java, Go (Golang), or Python (one or more)
  • Preferred: experience with Kubernetes, EC2, EBS, and Terraform; demonstrated expertise in storage engines or distributed systems development
