About the Role: Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier, On-call Relief

As an on-call relief mail carrier, you’ll be responsible for the sorting, collecting, and delivering of mail items in a safe and timely manner across rural and suburban routes in the Etobicoke area. You’ll need to quickly build and maintain a solid knowledge of local roads, customers, and delivery receptacles to ensure service runs smoothly whenever you’re called in.

This position also involves processing various Canada Post products and services — including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills — all while wearing your Canada Post identification visibly during deliveries. Safety, accuracy, and professionalism are at the core of everything you’ll do on the road. As an on-call relief employee, you may also become eligible to apply for upcoming permanent Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier positions, making this a potential stepping stone within the organization.

Responsibilities

Day-to-day work as an on-call relief mail carrier centres on delivering mail safely and efficiently across assigned routes. You’ll be the face of Canada Post in the community, so reliability and attention to detail matter at every step of the delivery process.

• Sort, collect, and deliver mail items in a safe and timely manner across rural and suburban routes
• Acquire and maintain knowledge of local roads, customers, and delivery receptacles in your assigned area
• Secure mail safely in your possession throughout the entire delivery process
• Process various Canada Post products and services, including Change of Address Notifications, Damaged Mail, and Items Delivered Bills (IDB)
• Wear Canada Post identification visibly at all times during delivery and collection
• Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lb (22.7 kg)
• Operate a motor vehicle safely in all weather and traffic conditions

Requirements / Skills

Canada Post is looking for candidates who are self-motivated, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently on the road. You should be reliable, organized, and confident behind the wheel in a variety of driving conditions. Applicants residing within 75 km of the Etobicoke post office are preferred.

• Valid permanent provincial driver’s licence — Class 5 or G required
• Satisfactory safe driving record — a driver’s abstract will be required
• Experience making deliveries and operating a motor vehicle in all kinds of weather and traffic conditions
• Vehicle meeting mandatory cargo requirements — minimum cargo capacity of 50 cu ft (1,415 litres), metal roof-top with accessory power outlet, and ideally a fifth door/hatchback for oversized items
• Automobile liability insurance for use of your personal vehicle, with your insurer notified of its use for Canada Post deliveries
• Language requirement: English Essential
