Optical Student – Costco – Ancaster, ON
Location: Ontario | Company: Costco Wholesale
Optical Student at Costco in Ancaster, Ontario pays $27.00 per hour. The position works in the Costco optical department, supporting members and a licensed Optician across sales, fitting, stocking and cleaning duties.
Day to day, you’ll help members select eyeglass frames and lens options, process payments, fit and adjust completed glasses, and keep the department stocked and clean.
About the Role: Optical Student
Much of the work involves direct member service: helping people choose frame and lens combinations, answering questions promptly, and making sure each interaction is courteous. You’ll also handle the point-of-sale side, ringing up orders, taking payment accurately, making change, and processing cheques, credit and debit transactions following Costco’s cash-handling procedures.
Where provincial law permits, and under the supervision of a licensed Optician, you’ll fit and adjust eyeglasses using a frame warmer and manual bending. You’ll also order equipment, merchandise and supplies through the computer system, and follow all safety and security procedures.
Stocking and cleaning are regular parts of the job: receiving and shelving merchandise, maintaining production and record-keeping standards, and cleaning the department by spraying, wiping and mopping, emptying trash, and operating the trash compactor and cardboard bailer. You may also assist in other areas of the warehouse as needed.

Job Summary & Tips for Applying
Quick Summary & What to Highlight: The Optical Student position at Costco in Ancaster involves helping members choose eyewear, handling transactions, fitting glasses under a licensed Optician’s supervision, and maintaining the department. Because the role requires a current provincial licence and registration in the applicable college, put those credentials at the top of your resume, tied directly to the fitting and adjustment duties.
Resume & Application Tips: List your provincial optical licence and college registration prominently, with the issuing body and expiry date. Since no prior work experience is required, focus instead on any customer service, cash handling or retail background you do have. If you’ve used a POS system or processed debit and credit payments before, name the system and describe the volume you handled. A line such as “Processed an average of 60 transactions per shift with zero cash discrepancies” gives a concrete sense of your accuracy.
Interview Preparation: Be ready to walk through how you’d handle a member who is unsure between two frame options, since member service and helping people choose frames and lenses are central duties. Have an example of a time you followed a detailed procedure carefully, which speaks directly to the cash-handling and fitting protocols in this role. The posting does not state the scheduled hours or shift pattern, so it’s worth asking about those before you accept an offer.
