About the Role: Optician / Contact Lens Practitioner (Licensed)
As a Licensed Optician at Costco Kelowna, your primary focus is assisting members in selecting and ordering the right eyewear, frames, lenses, contact lenses, and sunglasses based on their prescriptions. You’ll use a slit lamp to assess general ocular health, measure pupillary distance, determine proper multi-focal and bifocal heights, and ensure every order is dispensed accurately and safely.
Beyond clinical work, you’ll handle computer-based order processing, coordinate special orders with outside vendors, process payments accurately, and maintain proper contact lens trial inventory. You’ll also play a mentorship role by overseeing apprentices and students working toward their certification, all while keeping your own provincial licensing current and in good standing.

Responsibilities
The day-to-day work in this role blends clinical optician skills with hands-on member service and retail operations. From the moment a member walks into the optical department, you’re guiding them through the selection process with professional expertise and genuine care.
- Assist members in selecting eyeglass frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, and ophthalmic lens options appropriate to their prescription
- Measure pupillary distance accurately using a pupilometer or ruler, and determine proper placement of multi-focal and bifocal heights
- Examine members’ eyes using a slit lamp to assess general ocular health and assist in fitting contact lenses
- Process orders in the computer system and place special orders to outside vendors by telephone
- Dispense and adjust completed eyeglasses against the prescription using a frame warmer and manual bending techniques
- Handle payments accurately, including cash, cheque, credit, and debit transactions following proper procedures
- Maintain contact lens trial inventory and stock optical merchandise and supplies according to department standards
- Oversee apprentices and students as required to support their certification qualification
- Maintain provincial licensing requirements to ensure membership in the provincial order remains in good standing
- Keep the department clean and maintain a safe, high level of health care cleanliness at all times
Requirements / Skills
The ideal candidate holds a valid provincial dispensing optician licence and certified contact lens fitter designation. Costco values practitioners who combine clinical precision with strong member service instincts and the ability to work efficiently in a busy retail optical environment.
- Provincial Ophthalmic Dispenser accreditation — relevant education and training required
- Provincial Dispensing Optician licence — must be current and in good standing

- Licensed Optician / Contact Lens Fitter experience is preferred
- Computer, math, and member service skills are an asset in this role
